The BBC reporter actually remarked that the Mexican (i.e. Mayan) government has been encouraging people to misrepresent the end of the Mayan calendar as meaning the end of the world to encourage greater worldwide interest in Mexican (i.e. Mayan) history and culture to promote tourism and stuff.
