Saw The Hobbit myself. I'm not too experienced in the literature part of the franchise, but it was still an amazing movie. Too many of the people I went with were complaining that it's going to be drawn out to three movies. Sure, it seems a bit like cheddar whoring, but on the bright side now they HAVE to put more of the stuff that was in the book in the movies. They can't cut anything out because then it'd be too short to properly make another 2 movies out of.

The same thing was said for Book 7 of Harry Potter.

We got a good first half and a shitty second half with much less content and a lot of stuff cut out.

I just don't see why the Hobbit really needs 3 movies, but whatever.

As long as they're three good movies I don't give a fuck, it's not like you're getting ripped off. That said, I'll reserve my judgement until I've actually seen the things.

I am more excited to see giant robots slapping the shit out of giant monsters. I wonder if one of them will break out a sword of some kind at one point.

I like the really simplistic designs for the robots. This probably won't make me sick like transformers.

Too many people are complaining about "The Hobbit" spoilers.

Guys...it's based off of a BOOK...it's probably, hopefully, going to be the same ending...

It's especially annoying when my friend who's read the book (like, the ONLY one in our group who's read it) complains about spoilers. In his defense, he might just be doing it to be ironic though.

Because movies always follow the books faithfully with absolutely nothing removed or added to the adaptation, right?

The only thing I can understand about spoilers for stuff like that is that you don't know what from the book will actually appear, or what they'll do with a certain plot point. I'm sure it's annoying to hear "Man that one scene with X was THE BEST PART OF THE MOVIE", not because you didn't know that X happened in the book, but now you know it's something to look forward to that you didn't think before.

But the people who get pissy over Snape killing Dumbledore in the 6th movie despite reading the book and somehow thinking it wouldn't happen, those people are annoying.

To be fair, they're not really adapting 'The Hobbit' so much as they're adapting 'The Quest of Erebor' which contains Bilbo's adventure but also everything that happened around that time in Middle-Earth.

Tolkien didn't intend to make the Hobbit a part of his Middle-Earth mythos until later, which is why it got adapted later on. This is also the reason why the Hobbit reads as more of a fairy tale than the rest of his Middle-Earth works.

The guy who does Dresden Codak explains it quite well over here.

I did notice that the Hobbit kinda has that lighter and fluffier feel to it, but I thought maybe that had to do with it being written first (though I'm probably wrong on that and offended like every Tolkien fan) and before he really found a place for his writing.

He most likely wrote it purely because he wanted to, and then when it became successful he started doing it for both because he wanted to, and because he hoped it'd be successful.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing.

Yeah, there are authors that write great stories because they want to while also dreaming of success, whereas there are authors who just write novels because they know that the stuff will sell. Tolkien is definitely in the former camp.

But back to the actual movie:
I think that the scene with the Stone Giants did a good job of establishing the fact that there are much bigger things in the world and that everything does not, in fact, revolve around Thorin and Company's quest. I understand that in the book, nothing as dangerous as that happened to the group when they encountered the giants. However, I think going the extra mile like that really, really showed that some beings just don't give a daisies about their quest and will not give pause for their sake.'

What do you guys think Beorn is going to look like? I always imagined the guy looking like Paul Bunyan for some reason, but he's probably going to look like a super-buff version of Hagrid.

Except most of his work was only released posthumously, by his son, he had been working on the entirety of Middle-Earth and the Silmarillion (which The Lord of the Rings is only the final part of) since 1917 and you don't know what you're talking about.

He was first and foremost an academic wasn't he? I seem to recall something about him being a professor in English at a university somewhere?
