Stopped lurking to give an update on some aftermath that has not been said here.
The Jersey Shore is pretty much completely destroyed. The storm surge came in at high tide and took the boardwalk with it, and in some cases entire houses as well. To get an idea of the devastation, the Shore is really a string of barrier islands. On one side the bay, the other side has the Atlantic. The storm surge went to the bay across the entire island in some spots.
As for New York City, it's a worst case scenario. The lower half of Manhattan is still dark, and it will take time to get power up, as many transformers exploded during the storm. Some public transport will start tomorrow, and with the subways there are pumps going around the clock to get the water out, but there is so much water in the system that it will take time. some major tunnels are completely filled with water, and the army is bringing in more pumps to get the water out.
There were also a lot of fires that spread quickly due to winds and so many roads were blocked that firefighters were unable to get to them for some time. One fire on Long Island destroyed almost 40 houses.
