The Jersey Shore is pretty much completely destroyed. The storm surge came in at high tide and took the boardwalk with it, and in some cases entire houses as well. To get an idea of the devastation, the Shore is really a string of barrier islands. On one side the bay, the other side has the Atlantic. The storm surge went to the bay across the entire island in some spots.

As for New York City, it's a worst case scenario. The lower half of Manhattan is still dark, and it will take time to get power up, as many transformers exploded during the storm. Some public transport will start tomorrow, and with the subways there are pumps going around the clock to get the water out, but there is so much water in the system that it will take time. some major tunnels are completely filled with water, and the army is bringing in more pumps to get the water out.

There were also a lot of fires that spread quickly due to winds and so many roads were blocked that firefighters were unable to get to them for some time. One fire on Long Island destroyed almost 40 houses.

We appreciate your contribution, comrade; keep fighting the good fight and stay safe out there.

That goes to everyone currently under attack by the forces of hurricane

Wow, shit's managing to go down in ways good old fashioned ugly-americanism could only assume only happened elsewhere.

I guess a silver lining is that the National Guard guys on that side of the country get a chance to exercise their craft and earn a little pay.

Anyone seen this yet? I feel bad for anyone that has to commute from Staten Island. They're not even talking about the damage done there btw (not that I live there).

Not much damage here, just a bunch of trees that fell precariously close to smashing a few walls and cars. Something fell or exploded or something yesterday down the block, but nobody can find it.

nefarious bear you go to the same school as I did aaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

It's probably a transformer that exploded.

They're pretty loud and unless you go up and check them, you wouldn't necessarily know they've blown.

Shitloads of them have been going off up there because of the hurricane.

Still alive here on Long Island. Met some utility company guys from Indiana today, nice people. If lucky, I get power tomorrow.

My aunt, uncle, and cousins all live in Sandy Hook, NJ. We FINALLY got word from them today. Their house was on high enough ground to not take much damage or flooding, but the beach club they usually visited is now completely destroyed. Apparently the sandbar it previously sat on was completely pushed back nearly 100 yards, and there is currently 6ft of sand covering a major city street.

He said the damage is extraordinary, but that they are okay.

The sandbar part just freaks me out.

Actually not surprised at all it hadn't been destroyed before now. That's not really the most structurally stable of places to put a building, nor the best for surviving ocean-related incidents.

I've got my power restored and I'm sure you all know how crazy people are by now. I've dealt with the whole predicament the sanest I think. Everyone is bloody crazy and because everyone was crazy I felt like a madman because I was the only one being level headed. Regardless situation's getting better. It's nice to see you all again.

By "sanest" do you mean you ate the fewest number of your family members? Or that you bothered to cook them first using flint to create a fire?

It happens around here with snow. Best thing to do in a disaster? Remain calm and indoors. Their response? Drive around town hoarding stuff.

I was going over old xkcd comics and I found this. The alt-text is of particular note:

Quote:
I'd like to see more damage assessments for hurricanes hitting New York and flooding Manhattan -- something like the 1938 Long Island Express, but aimed a bit more to the west. It's just a matter of time.

The comic is over four years old.
