I think she was asking more the origins; I think she could have guessed the word's meaning through context.

Wikipedia says there's a bunch of different possible origins for "spic", I always thought it was just a shorter racist version of Hispanic.

Let me stop you there, Kirk. While I know this post is about proletariats that you have added to F:NV, this one sentence kind of got to me. When New Vegas came out, the first two weeks of sunshine that it saw were great! Everyone couldn't get enough of it! Then, hipsters happened. "Fallout: New Vegas sucks." "Fallout 3 is better." "New Vegas doesn't follow the storyline that Fallout 3 had," and many similar things. People changed to "Oh, New Vegas sucks. Fallout 3 is better!" For the past couple years, it's been like that. I am pop flyin' for you that you renewed your interest in the game, but the game wasn't overlooked. Everyone who was into gaming at the time knew about it. Tons played it. Most left with the thought that it was a crappy game because everyone else thought it was.

I'm not going to say much more because I've lost interest in this topic (a.d.d. ftw?), but I will say this: Fallout: New Vegas was underrated, but it was not overlooked. People started hating it for the same reasons people hate other things; it's different than the original.

I've always heard that it came from "spic and span", namely that "the spics crossed the span of the Rio Grande", and of course, cleaning products, so durr hurr, housekeeping.

It's actually not that much of a common word here. Even people disgruntled about people living here say "them mexicans" or "hispanics" or "spanish speakers". I've heard it a hell of a lot more in the north. Sometimes when we were on vacation to other states people would ask "How's the spic problem?"

It's really a bit... weird to even hear the word come up so naturally with some people.

I think wetback would be more of an offensive term for most Hispanic people. Hell it's something we throw at each other concerning how someone arrived in the US. The only thing that bothers me is when people continually assume I'm Mexican as if that's the only Hispanic country south of the US. Although I've also been told I look Chinese so I dunno
