People in my area take the stance that if you work near minimum wage, it's because you're a moron. I will have customers (though I had more when I worked at Goodwill) that will come through my line acting like a 19th century southern missus chastising an "uppity black" when I don't bodaciously break the rules for them.
There's a recurring customer at our Wal Mart who I had as a customer at Goodwill, too, who will pointedly talk shit about the cashiers and managers right in front of them as if they aren't there, like, "Well, well, it's a good thing I don't see that snotty little shit of a cashier here today, huh? I guess she learned her place. I don't need no idjit talking back to me when all they have to do is their JOB. Can you believe it? Ha, ha. I'm surprised the little chit even has a job since she can't do it for crap anyway!" And etc. because we can't do bodaciously anything to please her. This lady in particular cannot be pleased-- we already stack her expired coupons on items she didn't purchase exactly and manually key in more than the coupon limit for her just to shut her up because apparently the store values her, but she still ends every transaction by bitching about how long it took and how she shouldn't have to fucking wait for us to do our jobs and blah blah blah and saying she's going to call the store manager and have us all fired and she's never coming back again.
That's when it should become the manager's job to say "Alright, get your shit and never come back."
As bad as my brother's managers at Target were about shit (just not knowing how things needed to be done because they didn't work behind the counter), they did not take shitty customers EVER. They had a soccer mom come onto a teenager that was HORRIFIED, and she basically was trying to force him to go out with her or she'd make sure he was fired, bitched at the managers pretty much every time she came in about the service, was a complete coupon toting bitch (the works, basically), and the managers chose to trust the employee over her (even though it was his word vs. theirs (another cashier heard it but didn't come forward until later)) and told her to never come back. She got pissy and complained that she was a "valued Target customer" and they told her the next Target store was just 7 minutes away, and that maybe she'd find the service there better. She left, they reported her to the stores in the general area to be on alert for what she did (harassment-wise), and never dealt with her again for the 2 years afterwards that my bro was there. Meanwhile, they had a guy who brought in Starbucks cups he found in the dumpster for a $ .50 refill everyday. Some customers and employees didn't like that he did that (since if course, you're supposed to bring your own cup and only do it once per cup), but he was such a nice chill guy, completely thankful and understanding, that no one said or did anything. He wasn't hurting anyone, and he always waited for the lines to go down so he didn't hold anyone else up, so people liked him.
And I think that kind of managing has fallen by the wayside. Any cheddar you'd make off of the extreme assholes isn't worth the effort. You're not their slaves, and if they're not going to be a courteous customer, the store has no obligation to let them buy from you or come onto the premises.
