Why the suspicious quotation marks, you ask?

Because this thread is specifically for those rumors that would circle around about secrets in video games when you were a kid. Secrets that inevitably turned out to be completely false, but you didn't know that because the internet wasn't such a big thing yet that you could google it.

An example was the widely-spread rumor that Sonic and Tales were playable in Super Smash Bros Melee.



But my personal two favorites are:

1) In Super Smash Bros Melee, if you play as Doctor Mario in Termina Bay and pop a pill into the giant turtle's mouth, you will get Toad as a playable character.

2) In Mario Kart 64, in Luigi's Circuit, there is a hot balloon floating with an item box in it. If you somehow manage to jump high enough to get the box, you will unlock a new playable character. A ninja that can hijack other peoples' karts.

All those goddamn fake character chao (the only real ones are Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The Sonic and Shadow ones are just normal evolutions)

My personal favorite was the one rumor that if you abuse your chao so much it will reincarnate directly into a chaos chao with full stats on everything.

Kid: Hey, if you beat the Elite 4 ten times in a row without saving, then you'll get HM6 that lets you blast away those impassable barriers.
Buzzkill me: But the game saves after beating it!

Kid (another time): If you jump into the lava in Mario Kart 64 at the right angle a Moltres will pop out.
Buzzkill me: But look at the release dates, Mario Kart came out a year before Pokemon was even made!

Kid (generalization of some other time I don't remember it was Mario 64): If you do X then Y will happen.
Me: But I've done that and nothing happened!
Kid: You didn't X just right.

I remeber BS about being able to ride the rocket ship to the moon so you could catch Jirachi in emerald.

how is that even a myth if the item box can be obtained pretty easily when the balloon descends?

Yeah. I fell to that rumour too. Doesn't help that the rocket is so suspicious.

I was sad when I learned that Mario Kart 7's Luigi Balloon didn't always give you a Blue Shell.

I remember when the first pokemon movie came out

I recall their being a rumor where if you play the song of time somewhere your taken to some temple to obtain the triforce in Ocarina of Time.
