Also, I find it sad that Alder has a VANILLUXE as one of his Pokemon. I mean, sure, it's a good Pokemon, but it's the most fragile typing in the game! Maybe he should've gotten a Mandibuzz instead for Dex-filling reasons?

It's obscure in the same sense as F-Zero: Everyone's heard about it from Smash Bros, but almost no one in comparison actually plays the game. Also, most fanfic writers turn them into something completely different in their Smash Bros. fanfics.
