Just finished episode 8 as well.

Tarrlok you crazy bastard.

If Amon does turn out to be a different character in disguise, my guess would be one of the other council members. It's how it always is, isn't it? A background character who is ALWAYS THERE who influences ALL MAJOR DECISIONS is the bad guy?

Tarrlok is just batshit insane.

As far as a different voice goes... voice changing masks are certainly nothing new to cartoons. Also, if Mr. Sato can make Big Daddy robots, he can make magic masks.

Also I really want to see Korra in the Avatar State. I thought she was going to finally do it when she was kicking the shit out of Tarrlok but noooo he just bloodbent. :colbert: I wasn't expecting, Tarrlok to be able to do that, tbh.

I don't think anyone was expecting it, really.

Well I don't think we'll see Korra in her avatar state anytime soon since she can't connect spiritually to her past lives.

A dude on /co/ managed to sum up my thoughts on Korra pretty well.

Dude on /co/ wrote:
I think the greater emphasis on romance is throwing off the pacing of an already cramped season. Romance was barely mentioned in TLA because they didn't need to mention it. It was generally agreed that Aang had a crush on Katara and it rarely had to be shoved in the viewer's face. There were more small moments, like Aang asking the prisoners in Chin for girl advice or the "you will marry a great bender" moment in The Fortuneteller. LoK devoted an entire episode a love quadrangle, an episode that could have been better spent showing some actual plot progression or character growth. I'm still giving this show a chance, and I admit that I was probably soured by hype. But man, something about this show just doesn't gel with me the way TLA did.

And I swear someone is gonna say that "romance plot=character progression" and just...no. Just no. Was romance the thing that endeared you to the original characters? No, it was their personalities and the things they said and what they did and how they did them. Once their characters were more established, the show could do things like in season 3 when Aang got the most angsty. Right now, the romance is too much too soon and it's obfuscating the real character development, the stuff that makes you like a character.

TL;DR characterization seems marginalized in favor of trying to get people on tumblr to say 'OMG ALL DEZ FEELS DX'

There's 8 episodes right now, if you've seen those you've seen all that we've seen.
If you haven't look if nick.com lets you watch them, if not... well, google for other places.

I feel like the romance is simply an effect of the ages. There was no real romance in the first season because Aang was like twelve. Korra and these guys are seventeen and up. They're bodaciously at the point where they really start feeling things like that.

I personally don't mind the episode spent on romance. Avatar or not Korra's just a backcountry girl who jumps headfirst into, presumably, one of the most bustling metropolises in the world and her personality is just too big to take anything slowly. It makes sense that everything smacks her in the face at once; from city political shenanigans, to the Equalists, to a fistful of feelz that one might imagine she didn't have time or distraction for previously. It might not be the pacing of TLA but frankly this isn't TLA and in my opinion it fits pretty decently so far.

Yeah I didn't like the romance episode either.

It came way too soon in the season.

I know that they're teenagers, but the fact that there's been a lot more romance than actual character development throughout the first season is unsettling. Some of the previews for the next episode look like we'll get a decent dose of backstory, so hopefully they'll tone down the romance for the last handful of episodes for the season.

Well, the romance episode also focused on how their teamwork was strained by the love shenanigans and how they had to move past that and come to some form of understanding in order to be able to work together, so I wouldn't say that there was no character progression.

Also, keep in mind, while the episode may have seemed soon in an episodic sense, it seems like Korra arrived in Republic City in the Summer or early Fall, and this happened near wintertime.

I think that's enough time to be around someone and want to come to terms with their emotions. After all, TLA took place in less than the span of a year.
