I really don't understand how it's bad art. That's my opinion. I'm not defending anything. You guys are trying to make a point that you aren't even articulating besides some nebulous concept that this is bad because it is "worse" than world and it's "bad art".
So far the arguments I've seen online have been "They're bringing back Reznor in 3D? RUINED FOREVER" and this argument of how it hasn't been "improved" by some unexplained criteria therefore it sucks. That kind of sounds like complaining about there being changes/not enough changes to a minor boss character that's been gone for 20 years.
You are missing the point here so bad, It isn't that they changed the boss charter, they just made him look really, really horrible. Nobody cares that it's the same character. Really, we don't. The argument isn't that "it's different and its 3D so it's bad", The argument is "it clashes terribly, the model work is just horrible, and it looks like shit"

And so what? It's branding. Back then they had to make games drastically different in pretty much every way or else no one would buy or they'd confuse the games. Mario has an established brand and doesn't need to shake the formula on their 2D mario games in aesthetic style too much to have a successful game.
So..by your logic, it's okay to be lazy and make a shitty game, as long as it sells good?

And keep in mind, hardware was a limiting factor with the graphics revolving around the gameplay. As Mario's gameplay changed, so did the graphical needs. With gameplay pretty much strapped in, graphics can be consistent, but still flexible with the added power of the consoles. The most important aspect of the game is that it's fun.
that's the thing though, in the older games, the graphics were consistent in the older games. But they were unique to each game. That made it interesting. No one is asking for cutting edge graphics, we just want it to look nice.
Wanna know why paper mario was such a big hit? Hint it was because they swapped up their formula and tried something different. It had it's own unique art style and appeal to it, the gameplay had fun aspects to it, and the environments were done well.

Besides which, I found SMB3 to be a pretty shit game with bad level design so I'm kinda glad the NSMB games are consistently good, if somewhat too easy.
keep dying on a level
"shitty game bad design 0/10 fuckthis"
