I'm surprised this thread's been around this long with no mention of Hatoful Boyfriend.

So, anyone plans on getting Christine Love's upcoming visual novel?

I beat 999 a while back and it was hands down the best story in a game I've experienced in a long time. I went conspiracy theorist all over that thing. It was amazing.

I ordered the "sequel" Virtue's Last Reward a few days ago, and I can't even handle waiting for it. I've heard it's everything about 999 but better. I've watched the trailer maybe 10 times in anticipation.

Dangit FedEx, why don't you deliver on Saturdays. Now I have to wait until next week.

I've been playing VLR over the last week, actually just finished the last puzzle room last night, but I'm taking a break to prepare myself for the ending

It's just as intense and surreal, even knowing about all the morphogenetics and such from 999, it just gets more nuts

That's good to know. I was worried about that. Of course now the question will end up being who is MR-ing with whom (or if any of that is going on at all), which is great because it is conspiracy theorist fodder.

But really, what I care about most at this point is All-ice/Alice. I was really interested in that aspect of 999, and I want to know what the deal is with it. Several of my conspiracy guesses from the past game involved her, since I fell for the red herring pretty hard. I really hope that is actually her, and that she is actually 3000 years old and everything. Then I might be retroactively justified.

All right, I came to this thread to continue my gushing about VLR.

My other favorite thing about this game is the fact that each of the three main branches (yellow, magenta, or cyan) not only has a different mystery/thematic focus, but also that each path paints different pictures of all the characters. (This rant is based on the game being only mostly completed, so ending spoilers/major reveals are not here except accidentally.)

The best is probably Dio. Playing right to left, the cyan branch paints him as a jerk who is selfish about wanting to get out, but who helps out when necessary and generally is off to the sidelines. All in all, he just comes across as a stressed out guy dealing with a terrible situation, but one who isn't really that bad. But as you play the other branches, you start to see more of him. Such as the fact that he cares less and less for Quark's well-being over time, becomes more ruthless in his escape attempts, and his general attitude becomes very harsh. As far as I know, he is the only person who will pick betray every time.

All the characters do this. (Well, except Quark. He's more or less the same all across the board.) Each character seems more trustworthy or more suspicious depending on which branch you're in... Sometimes it's when you work with them and you see their true colors, other times when you're not working with them, and seeing how they're interacting with others. And being on your team =/= more trustworthy, not always. Some characters look worse up close than they do from afar.

It's the most organic method of character development I've ever seen in a game. Different characters seem different along different paths because the situations are different, just like in real life how the same person can seem completely different depending on the circumstances. And some of them 180 on you.

It's enthralling to watch/play, and makes trying to figure out who's who and what's going on even more difficult/fun.
