I don't remember if we had a thread like this. I know we had a book thread once.

Who are your favorites authors?

Haruki Murakami and Kurt Vonnegut for me.

Dumas is incredible. I could read anything of his all day long. Lloyd Alexander opened my eyes to fantasy novels, T. H. White kicks booty, Mary Stewart had a fantastic re-imagining of a classic character, Ursula Le Guin wrote the only books about dragons that I didn't hate, and Dean Koontz has done wonders for frankenstein.

Oh, shit, how could I have forgotten T.A. Barron.

He's the reason why I'm Merlin.

Somebody told me to read Night Watch by Terry Pratchett, and a week later I was a Sergey Lukyanenko fan. It wasn't until some months later that I found out I was reading a translated Russian novel of the same name, but hey, it was awesome anyway.

Michael Crichton had plenty of good books, even if most people only remember him for Jurassic Park.

And I, uh, wrote my English thesis paper last year on J.R.R. Tolkien.

My friend read some Terry Pratchett. I have yet to read anything by him, but now he's on my watchlist.

Oh, Merlin, you really need to check out Terry Pratchett.

If I wrote something, I could only hope to god I was half as funny and witty as him.

Ken Kesey, John Steinbeck.

I just realized I'm hella Californian. :U

Speaking of J.D. Salinger, I didn't terribly love the plot of Catcher in the Rye, but his voice in that book is really... catchy? I found myself thinking like Holden Caulfield after reading it.

Also I don't read as much as I should.

EDIT: Oh man! I almost forgot, a long time ago, Bear Police started a thread telling everyone to read Ubik by Phillip K. Dick. I read it last year. Very good stuff. Everyone should read it.

David Foster Wallace and Thomas Pynchon.

For real. PKD is my favorite sci-fi writer. Check out Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said, if you have time.

There's a lesser known book by him called 'Nine Stories' that I enjoyed. Moreso than 'Catcher in the Rye'.

...I need to read more books, because I don't really know enough authors to have any favorites.

I guess I'll just check out the authors you guys mention, since you seem to know your stuff.
