HEY. KONY. WHAT'S THIS.

Well sir/madam, if you would like to know, click the banner above, or watch this YouTube video.

But, if you cannot do either of those actions, here is a, somewhat simplified summary of it.

Joseph Kony is a Ugandan Rebel Leader. But, he is not rebelling for any reason. Uganda has a stable, I believe something along the lines of a Republican, or Democrat party. This man is rebelling just for the sake of being powerful. No one supports him, no one is willingly following him. So why is he a big deal? Well, he's thrown a nasty wrench into the lives of Ugandan people, leaving everyone in fear of him. Why you may be asking?

He kidnaps small children and turns them into soldiers and sex slaves. He kidnaps children from the ages of 4-8, and trains girls into being sex slaves, and boys, he turns them into soldiers who will mutilate the faces of their own brothers and sisters if they resist, and force them to kill their parents. And he has done this for 20 years. And yet, most people, probably including you fine ladies and gents, have never heard of him.

So, blah blah the usual helping stuff, you can read it on the site if it isn't overloaded or something. But this "campaign's" main idea of stopping Kony, is on April 20th, when night falls, all who are supportive of this, and want to do something, are going to smack posters, stickers, banners, the whole nine yards, about Kony, across the world. Shit's going to be pretty great. Hell, I might even partake in this event.

So, yeah. Kony is bad. You can stop him. Big important thing for this time of year. Invite your friends on the 20th of April to cover the world in Kony, so that 33 thousand kids and growing will be freed from this tyrannical douchenozzle.

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but how is reblogging this video on tumblr going to save children in uganda from a psychopathic warlord.

Also, why the 20'th of april? If you're going to do something why not right now. Imagine how many lives are lost and ruined in the month or so from the date. You don't set dates for something like this like it's an ice cream social, you should just do it.

I dunno bro. Just how it is. I just saw it on YouTube and decided "why not share with the forum?" Do whatever, I'm just sharing it.

This really won't do anything. People on the Internet amounts to diddly when it comes to this man. He's not going to care, Uganda isn't going to care, there will be zero impact. Best you can do is make people aware of something they have no power to fight.

What would be even better is trying to make the UN recognize this and put a stop to it. About an equal chance of working but at least the intent is being put towards something productive.

Exatcly, send it to people who can do something. Senators, Congress, the UN if you can. THEY are who you should be getting the attention on.

Well, there is more to this then what I explained. Just, watch the video if you want to know everything. Like I said, I simplified it, cut some other details out. It was just a generalized explanation.

Yeah no seriously guys, if you watch the video in full you'll realize that congressmen, the senate, and the president are all in support of this movement already. They are essentially raising awareness of this very serious issue to make Kony a household name, and to keep the hunt for him going. If we lose interest, then the mission is scrapped.

I know there are a bunch of things similar to this movement that don't pick up any steam and are basically people whining on the internet about things that they cannot change, but don't instantly dismiss everything on those assumptions. This is a good thing, and people should be made aware.

I doubt hanging posters that just say "Kony 2012" will do anything.

If it said something like "We demand the arrest of the war criminal Joseph Kony" then that will grab people attentions.

I'd pay attention to that.

But I wish the video paid more attention to the Ugandas rather than spending 20 minutes focused on all the white highschool kids jumping around and shit.

Also I found these articles which raises a lot of interesting points against KONY 2012 and the Invisible Children

I'm going to be honest, the thread title made me think that there was a presidential candidate named Kony.

I guess it's good to know every side of the story: http://visiblechildren.tumblr.com/

Quote:
I do not doubt for a second that those involved in KONY 2012 have great intentions, nor do I doubt for a second that Joseph Kony is a very evil man. But despite this, I’m strongly opposed to the KONY 2012 campaign.

KONY 2012 is the product of a group called Invisible Children, a controversial activist group and not-for-profit. They’ve released 11 films, most with an accompanying bracelet colour (KONY 2012 is fittingly red), all of which focus on Joseph Kony. When we buy merch from them, when we link to their video, when we put up posters linking to their website, we support the organization. I don’t think that’s a good thing, and I’m not alone.

Invisible Children has been condemned time and time again. As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they haven’t had their finances externally audited. But it goes way deeper than that.

The group is in favour of direct military intervention, and their cheddar funds the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces. Here’s a photo of the founders of Invisible Children posing with weapons and personnel of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them, arguing that the Ugandan army is “better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries”, although Kony is no longer active in Uganda and hasn’t been since 2006 by their own admission.

Still, the bulk of Invisible Children’s spending isn’t on funding African militias, but on awareness and filmmaking. Which can be great, except that Foreign Affairs has claimed that Invisible Children (among others) “manipulates facts for strategic purposes, exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA’s use of innocent children as soldiers, and portraying Kony — a brutal man, to be sure — as uniquely awful, a Kurtz-like embodiment of evil.” He’s certainly evil, but exaggeration and manipulation to capture the public eye is unproductive, unprofessional and dishonest.

As Christ Blattman, a political scientist at Yale, writes on the topic of IC’s programming, “There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. […] It hints uncomfortably of the White Man’s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming.”

Still, Kony’s a bad guy, and he’s been around a while. Which is why the US has been involved in stopping him for years. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has sent multiple missions to capture or kill Kony over the years. And they’ve failed time and time again, each provoking a ferocious response and increased retaliative slaughter. The issue with taking out a man who uses a child army is that his bodyguards are children. Any effort to capture or kill him will almost certainly result in many children’s deaths, an impact that needs to be minimized as much as possible. Each attempt brings more retaliation. And yet Invisible Children supports military intervention. Kony has been involved in peace talks in the past, which have fallen through. But Invisible Children is now focusing on military intervention.

Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. If people know this and still support Invisible Children because they feel it’s the best solution based on their knowledge and research, I have no issue with that. But I don’t think most people are in that position, and that’s a problem.

Is awareness good? Yes. But these problems are highly complex, not one-dimensional and, frankly, aren’t of the nature that can be solved by postering, film-making and changing your Facebook profile picture, as hard as that is to swallow. Giving your cheddar and public support to Invisible Children so they can spend it on supporting ill-advised violent intervention and movie #12 isn’t helping. Do I have a better answer? No, I don’t, but that doesn’t mean that you should support KONY 2012 just because it’s something. Something isn’t always better than nothing. Sometimes it’s worse.

If you want to write to your Member of Parliament or your Senator or the President or the Prime Minister, by all means, go ahead. If you want to post about Joseph Kony’s crimes on Facebook, go ahead. But let’s keep it about Joseph Kony, not KONY 2012.

I can officially call bullshit on this movement now because a girl in my class started talking about it and was shot down in about 15 seconds by my third hour teacher, using many of the arguments listed above by Great Handsome Oppressor.

God daisies that guy is smart

Well, awareness is better than nothing I suppose. I do hope people will look deeper into the issue than just be slacktivists and post about it on Facebook and whatnot.

Not a whole lot we can do about this issue and its a thorny problem. Still, knowing about it is the first step, from there hopefully movements can be made to people who actually will make a difference about it (governments, etc).
