To be fair, he was twelve. If you were that age and had a thousand dollars you'd spend it on video games as well. And it was the high point of his life. I know for a fact that the other winner, a six year old girl from Texas, also spent her prize cheddar on toys. Granted she took her classmates to a toy store, divided up the cheddar, and let her fellow students buy what they wanted, but it was still spent on toys.

I know a lot of people that think that this event was the point at which Chris lost his chance at being normal. It's also not too hard to conclude that this could be where Chris developed his belief that he ought to be showered with praise and rewards for performing minor tasks.

Except I think it had already happened by that point. Chris developed his work ethic between the ages of one and six like the rest of us. Except Chris was rewarded with toys for the simple task of speaking. Chris's actual point of no return came when he was nine, when the Nathaniel Greene Elementary School Incident happened and Chris lost out on a chance to go to a corrective facility for children with autism.

Oh, totally. No doubt. It just makes me laugh that he regards it as fame or prestige. I guess at that age it makes sense, but since he's older...though he hasn't really grown. I dunno, I hate to blame parents, but they should have done something.

Chris's history is all over CWCki and other parts of the internet. It's not too surprising that he knows so much about Chris. *Lie

They should have, but didn't. Instead they refused to let Chris-chan get help with dealing with his autism and continued to treat him like a spoiled baby. By the time they got tired of treating him that way, he was way past the point of no return.
He might have turned out better if his parents had been smart enough to swallow their pride and admit that their son needed some help.

I do not think Chri's parents are the kind of people which try to solve problems. I think they'll just ignored it, thinking it will go away, like they did for everything else.

Uh, yes I've read the cwcki... but he still knows more than the apparent wiki. :P
Or I'm just skipping shit as I read, who knows.

Thing is, they're aware that Chris has problems and are more than willing to milk it for all that it's worth. When Chris does something stupid, their stance is that it's not his fault because he's autistic. When Chris is offered something to help with his autism so he doesn't do stupid things, their stance is that Chris shouldn't be treated differently because he's autistic.

Bit of a shame it's just as much as a problem with the parents as with him himself. I always thought the parents just gave up because it got to an uncontrollable stage

With autism, it's important for parents to keep up the same diligence and behavior as the teachers/specialists. This includes doing the same routine in order to lessen confusion and give stability, and rewarding/punishing them consistently when they do good/bad to reinforce morals and behaviors.

Chris never had consistency. The schools would reprimand him, and his parents would reward him and instill the idea that the schools were wrong to reprimand him. He didn't get "taught" right and wrong, he got rewarded much more often and much more generously than he should, and he was hardly reprimanded for what he did. It was "just the autism" that was making him do this.

The autism just took away a few steps of development and understanding that other kids naturally had. He could have learned this had he gotten help. However, he never got the chance to take those steps because his parents never raised him to overcome his autism, merely they ignored his autism unless they could either benefit from it or it needed to be addressed, and then, it was back to ignoring it.

Autism didn't make Chris the way he is. His parents did.

What's terrifying is that my nephew is in the same situation. He's three and his father refuses to even consider the possibility that he's autistic, even though it's abundantly clear to all of us. He just cuts people out of their life when they suggest they should check it out, including doctors.

I guess Chris has done some good things. For example, he inspired me not to be like him. So I bought an exercise bike, I've started doing push ups and lifting wights again, and I'm going back to school so I can get a real job.

He's not the ONLY reason obviously, but being as different from him as I can is always a good thing.
