I've been gathering what I call a 'global stereotype' on my state and country, I hope to begin a study on how they originate and evolve.

I do not want to start fights, this is a discussion not a argument.

To start, I live in Arkansas, United states. To anyone who doesn't know me, I appear as a fat, uneducated, ignorant asshole redneck. I would like to know why.

Stereotype definition: "A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing: "sexual and racial stereotypes."

I've actually only met two people from Arkansas and they were both wonderful, educated, and very intelligent people (even if they did talk with a deep drawl haha.) Honestly the only stereotype about Arkansas I've heard is that everyone's inbred haha x: But I don't think anyone really believes that - especially not me.

I am originally from Louisiana (gator-hunting, unintelligible accents,) and currently live in Texas (cowboy boots, Texan drawls and barbeque.) I follow...none of these stereotypes haha. I have little to no regional accent aside from standard "American," I do however enjoy a wide variety of seafoods (including alligator,) and once had a strong Cajun accent but I don't like cowboy boots, barbeque and southern accents kinda drive me nuts haha.

Most stereotypes are grounded in reality. Most of my family from Louisiana are avid hunters of a variety of game, gators included. Ever seen Swamp People? All of that is 100% accurate. I've been on those hunting boats - I've seen how they do it first-hand (and got slapped by several dead reptiles.) Their methods, their accents, everything. I often have to translate for Tuxedo Mask when we happen to catch it on (and the subtitles aren't always right btw.) But I love my Cajun heritage; it's very deep, rich and unique to me. And in Texas...well. People really do run around in cowboy boots and hats and wear Wranglers and spurs to town. I live in the CITY, far from any kind of ranch or anything but I still see those guys at the mall haha. Meat is a huge part of the diet here, and everyone loves barbeque and steak and beer and football. Most people have a strong southern accent.

Many people believed I wasn't from Arkansas at all, due to the fact that I didn't have an accent. I wish quite often that people would stop and think before rushing into the 'truth'.

I was born and raised in Florida, so I guess people would think of skinny, tanned models or something? I dunno, I've never really heard any stereotypes of Floridians. But I've moved to Louisiana, and shazza took care of that bit.

I definitely have my stereotypes about the South, but for the most part I avoid the area and try not to judge (oh hey this is a horrible-sounding sentence).

I've lived in Virginia for around 10 years now, but I can't think of many stereotypes indigenous to the area. You go south, you have all the basic southern tropes, but for those of us that live north around D.C., you basically have the "rich, white conservative" stereotype. I honestly hate this more than I hate the "ignorant, uneducated redneck" stereotype, so I just live in this great melting pot of shitty stereotypes, none of which I fit.

I...I really want to move back to Chicago when I get older.

That's where many people thought I was from. I don't know what I'm like because I don't have to. I know I'll always be myself.

People seem to think that Texans are all ignorant, when we actually have some of the best medical centers in the world.

People seem to think the Dutch are greedy when we actually give away the most cheddar to charities per resident out of any country in the world.

Personally I just spread the love.

I feel as though I don't even have to explain the stereotype of a black New Yorker

Unless maybe you're not from the US, but even then I wouldn't doubt it's pretty well known

Basically the stereotype is your basic African American stereotype, plus endless amounts of hip-hop obsession, being in a gang, generally being a huge asshole, being poor, smokin dat grass, and yadda yadda yadda

Though I guess you'd also have to add in my irish side, which is less hip-hop and more alcohol.

Southern American:

Born in Texas? Check.
Born in a trailer? Check.
Delivered by my cousin? Check.

But then we get to the bit where my parents work at renaissance festivals, I'm way hella nerdy, I live on the East Coast now (though I lived in AZ up to age seven), and my sister is attending Cornell.

I think I disprove at least three stereotypes alone.

I'm also from Texas.

I think the only stereotype I really have a problem with is people thinking we're stupid/uneducated super-conservative Bible-thumpers who want to kill gays and other ridiculous exaggerations like that, although really that overlaps with stereotyping of Christians too...

The other stuff is just southern culture, which I enjoy. I think barbecue is pretty good sometimes, I love Southern comfort foods, I think cowboy hats/boots are pretty cool even though I don't own any, I know a lot of folks who hunt, I've been to rodeos and honky-tonks but it's not really my thing. No big deal, I've never met anyone so stupid as to think EVERYONE here likes those things.

Florida has three stereotypes: People who were just too smart for Alabama, old people from the rest of the country, and Cubans.
