I like the martin design better, but that's a better recreational toy than the martin jetpack could ever be.

SCIENTISTS MAKE BREAKTHROUGH ON “MOST RELAXING TUNE”

“Tranquil”, a variation on scientists’ previous track “Weightless”, is now being called a scientific breakthrough in sleep and relaxation technology. Utilizing a rhythmic and dissonant soundscape, barren yet fertile enough to produce outstanding results. Including the new patented technology designed by SleepKeys™, a company that develops musical peripherals designated for “An audience in need of a nap!”

SleepKeys™ developer, Harold Bracisezewski, released a statement saying: “Our incredible new device, The DreamCatcher, provides the whooshing and throbbing bass sounds capable of soothing your average child, adult, and even household pets.”

Man, and I thought the last one was relaxing.

So I learned something interesting the other day. For some reason, I always thought fingers get wrinkled in water because they absorb water. It's kind of silly now that I think about it (wouldn't they just bloat?), but it's never been challenged so I never thought about it.

Apparently there is a special set of nerves in your fingers that sense moisture on the skin. When they are activated, they cause your skin to pull back and curl into ridges, making it easier to get a hold of wet surfaces. There's actually a reasonable evolutionary answer to this confusing reaction.

Huh.

I always just thought the outer layers of skin just bloated slightly, since it seemed to be the only thing that made sense...

I wonder why we'd have this adaptation though. Did we get it from our primate ancestors, or further back/more recent than that? It doesn't seem to be something all that useful to tree-dwelling/field animals to have. Especially since Africa didn't really have that many large bodies of water that necessitated swimming. :/

Curiouser and curiouser.

Yeah, probably primates.
Raining, stuff is all slick and slippery.
Helps with climbing.

I know, but there also isn't too much of primate habitat that one would need to swim through.

Unless the adaptation isn't meant for swimming purposes and just dampness in general.

It's not for swimming, primates aren't designed for swimming at all. That's why we need to learn how to swim. This is more for keeping hold of branches and other stuff after a hard rain.

There's one theory that a lot of early humans lived in swampy areas. It would be very useful there.

Either way, that adaptation is super cool.
