i'm purrious about what you consider absolutely necessary. my cousin's wife had to have a double mastectomy because of breast cancer. so that was necessary, obviously. but she got breast implants afterwards so she would have breasts. do you consider that necessary/acceptably necessary?

I'd say it wasn't necessary, but I certainly don't blame her. Plastic surgeries should be reserved [OPINION DISCLAIMER] for people who have suffered damage to their bodies in some way, and I think having breasts removed because of disease certainly counts.

No, what? That's not even comparable. We weren't talking about medical procedures anyway, we were discussing having your eye color changed, a purely cosmetic surgery.

Woops, I can see why you'd think I meant that, should've clarified, my bad. By absolutely necessary I meant meant actually necessary, in the sense that it will have an actual impact on your life that's worth the risk, ie something less trivial than eye colour. This is regardless of whether your body's been damaged by accidents/disease. Whatever you want to do with your body and cheddar is ultimately your own decision, but I just want to stress that surgery is something you should give careful thought before doing.

So um. I'm guessing most of you guys know your share of science and stuff, so I have a completely ignorant question that will probably piss off a lot of college kids:

Okay so, back when I was in middleschool, I had a math/history teacher that went on rants about how awful genetic engineering is and how its not what God intended and people are playing God when they do it and ect ect ect (It was a Christian school, mostly everyone there was Baptist. This probably has some relativity to why I was a complete bias ignorant asstard whenever I first joined AZ, Bacon knows what I'm talking about.)

Anyway, during one of his protests about his high and mighty opinions (during HISTORY class), he brought up genetic engineering and whatnot. I, being the curious guy that I generally am, asked him if it would be possible to cross two species together, i.e. make a human with wings or something.

His reply, of course, was "Yes, but it would be an abomination of God."

So, figuring he would try to degrade me in a place I was already generally disliked, I stopped talking.

Was he full of shit or is something like that actually theoretically possible?

It's not really possible to make anything fly that resembles a human no. There are just too many structural changes you have to make.

A person with wings is quite a distance from our current technological standpoint, but I guess it's not impossible. We're making hybrids everyday right now. Ligers are a real thing. Most of our agriculture involves genetically engineered plants.

And I shouldn't have to say, anyone claiming to know God's intention is deluded or just plain stupid.

actually you can make anything fly, if it goes fast enough at a slightly upward angle. ROCKET MAN

Rockets would be far removed from genetic enhancement, more like mechanical engineering. The wings required to lift a human off the ground would be absurdly large.

Yea but man. I want to see this shit happen.

Also yea, I looked up to this guy like he was a bloody genius at the time, but then once I discovered the real world I realized he was pretty much an idiot.

It doesn't have anything to do with technology, only with biology. I don't want to get too in depth, but if everything else stays the same, you'd need a wing span of at least 10 meters to lift the average person iirc. And to support those wings you need enormous muscles. And to support those muscles you need a higher metabolism. And it pretty much keeps going on like that.

If you want human-like beings that can fly, you need to add in some non-biological factors, like nano-muscles or something.

Ninja'd a bunch

It's not far-fetched. Obviously figuring out how to attach wings to a person will be the most difficult hurdle. After that, reducing bone density and organizing a hyper-diet to perfect the muscle-to-weight ratio will be a walk in the park.
