Off is a French (Edit: IT'S BELGIAN LOL) amateur game made by Mortis Ghost and Alias Conrad Coldwood, and finished in 2008. It was made using RPG Maker 2003, and despite this handicap, manages to be an excellent game.
Off's story takes place in a weird, unique universe. In this game, you are a formless entity controlling 'the Batter', a strange person on his way to achieve a holy mission: purification of the world. Mortis Ghost describes the game with the following words:
"Off is an RPG with original graphics and ambiance. You control the Batter who, helped by a cat with a misshapen head and flying circles, has the task of purifying the world from the evil within it. A very classic game system at the service of a different universe. With violence and bright colours."
Despite its banal gameplay, Off offers a peculiar experience thanks to its excellent music, simplistic graphics, and its strange universe populated by stranger folks. The story, as confusing and open-ended as it is, is quite solid and enjoyable if a bit short (the game probably won't last more than fifteen hours).
Off has been praised in French gaming circles for being a very imaginative game with a strong ambiance and likeable cast, and being able to work around the limitations of RPG Maker 2003 to offer not just a game, but an experience. It's often compared to the darker, more pessimistic parts of the Mother series in ambiance. I would go one step further and compare it to a few Suda 51 games, such as killer7.
It rapidly became one of my favourite games, and I was pained to be unable to share it with my English-speaking brethren. However, around a month ago, an English version of the game was released on the Starmen.net forums. The fan translation, while not perfect, keeps most of the ambiance intact, and is of overall good quality. I highly recommend playing it.
Here is the original thread on the Starmen.net forums. Please read it for more info, a link to download the game, and a few instructions before playing it.
Be aware that the game can be at times creepy, and is pretty much all the time weird. Try to keep an open mind, as the game's strength doesn't lie in how it plays but in how the story goes.
Here are a few screenshots, too:
