Not very well. Lions aren't exactly "eating machines." And it's the females that do the hunting.

Now a pack of wolves...

That's what I thought first too, but then I remembered wolves don't usually attack people. It could work of course, just have to piss them off enough. But the same thing with lions really, they don't have to actually eat the zombies, but the zombies will attack them when they go hunting, which will probably make the lions go berserk and kill anything in sight.

Of course you're risking the survivors, but at least they have the brains to run away from any dangerous animal.

Hmm, what about bears? With their cubs. That'd turn them into killing machines very fast.

The thought of an elephant herd stampeding through zombies is pretty awesome as well.

It might depend on what sort of damage is most effective. Predators such as wolves and lions will instinctively jump for the throat while a bear will just maul indiscriminately.

Animals can be carriers of a virus or bacteria and not suffer any ill effects from it.

Intentionally creating circumstances which provide the potential for a virus to mutate into a different animal strain is also inadvisable; You are providing the virus with windows to mutate into airborne, water-borne or other cross-contamination vectors.

The biggest problem with containing a virus like this internationally is migrating birds - you may be able to contain the human vectors but completely controlling birds is near to impossible (the birds don't even have to become infected themselves - they may just act as carriers of the virus).

Oh right, forgot about that. Well at least you could kill off the few remaining animals fairly easily before they can spread. I kid, that would be way too cruel.

Well, at least most zombie fiction seems to imply the virus can only be spread directly by being bitten. Else you'd have to worry about airborne viruses as well when you send in soldiers.

Let's look at zombies from a biological standpoint. Any time a zombie must feed or infect to create more zombies, it has to go up against it's primary predator, humanity. That's a major detraction from its survivability as a species right there. Also, while zombies possess good sense of smell and hearing, they lack higher processing capability that most animals have. They don't avoid obstacles, such as pits, cliffs, and manmade anti-zombie defenses. Zombies do not look for a better route to their prey if one route is blocked. Zombies lack higher motor functions, and cannot climb ladders or open doors. Their main advantages are intimidation due to numbers and appearance, but this doesn't make up for their disadvantages in the smarts department.

Make sure the walls are tall enough. They don't think, but by sheer crowd size they may start piling over each other and spilling over the wall.

The drawback about roofs is escape.

Never go somewhere where you don't have an escape in case of things going wrong.

And the problem with escape routes is that most are security flaws. Any hole for you to get out is a hole for zombies to get in.
