When you talk about playing anything professionally, you want individual skill to top all other factors, with as little "surprises" as possible.
Items add a random X factor that can be more fun (see "surprises"), and combat with items does take skill, however, the random nature of item spawns can tip the scales in any sides favor, all due to some lucky, (or unlucky) math.
EXAMPLE
It's down to one stock each, and a unlucky Falco user uses his Side-B move into a Bob-omb that spawned right into his path the INSTANT he started moving, and loses because of it.
Was that the due to great skill of winner? or the lack of skill of the loser?
Or simply being owned by an unpredictable, random variable?
What if the falco user had a minimal amount of health, say, 40%, and his opponent was on the ropes with 170%?
Who WOULD have won if the bomb didnt spawn there?
Thats why tourney's usually ban such X factors from games, they have a chance of making the winner questionable. Less clear cut.
You know if a situation like that Bob-omb scenario occired, it would cause such an uproar that it is likely both sides (unless the winner is a total prick) would demand a do-over.
Now not to saw that ALL items cause this. Bats, Beam Swords, Ray guns, motion bombs, and examples of items that would not greatly upset the balance of the playing field. They, as items, are very predictable, and can't bite you in the booty with an inconvienient spawn, like star power, Bob-ombs, explosive containers, and health.
Ok, I like Playing with items when I want to have a crazy fun time, but if someone wants a genuine challange of pure skill, I turn them off, (usually all BUT the smash ball, depending on characters). Sometimes, I leave on ONLY items that are predictable, as stated above.
