Season 1 is 1963.
Series 1 is 2005.

Doctor Who uses 'series' for the revived show to differentiate from the seasons of the old show.

It's easy to tell someone they can come in on a show a season or so in and everything will make sense. It's harder to tell someone to come in on a show's 27th season (which is the 2005 revival (series 1)) and everything will be dandy.
