Finally started on Johannes Cabal the Necromancer. Little did I know, it's the debut novel of one of the co writers of the Broken Sword games. I'm incredibly impressed with it so far. The set up is a bit eh, but they guy has talent. Defeinitely interesting so far.

The Dresden Files are always good. You don't even have to start at the beginning of series, I started with Proven Guilty.

I own the entire series. I even suggested it in this thread for other people to read.

Might re-read Misery by Stephen King. I love that book but it probably won't have such a big impact the second time around.

He does many badass things throughout the series. Like getting himself killed by an angry ghost, then revived with someone else doing CPR on his physical body so he can tag-team said angry ghost with his own wizard ghost.

Anything I should be cautious of before going into The Nine Lives of Chloe King?

That is, if anyone has read the books?

Thoroughly, thoroughly impressed with The Necromancer so far. I thought it was just going to be a heavy handed 'quirky humour' adventure about some guy who does shit with zombies, but it's got a lot more going on than that. Each chapter is almost an autonomous vignette - a rich family that all hate each other, domestic abuse, the ghost of a long dead soldier, shit goes on. And under all that there's the strained relationship between the titular necromancer Johannes and his brother Horst. I find myself identifying quite a lot more than I thought I would with the characters.

And, little did I know, the author was one of the writers who did the Broken Sword adventure games; this is his debut novel. Pretty interesting seeing a game designer switch to a different medium.

Thirteen Orphans by Jane Lindskold is a good fantasy story. It's set in present day, and explores a lot of the mythology behind the Chinese Zodiac and the game of Mahjong. If you're a fan of "realistic fantasy" (I couldn't think of a genre) then you might want to pick it up.

Someone else recommended the Weather Warden series to me, so I'm going to check that out along with your suggestions.

Main reason I prefer YA is because that's the age group I write for.

It's not a book but still: I just finished reading Den Ring des Nibelungen, a cycle of four operas written by Richard Wagner from 1849 to 1876. It's actually a big adaptation of ancient germanic legends (Norns, Dwarves, Gods, Walkyries, Siegfried and Fafner, etc). It's pretty good even if I only had the script.

It's a major work, Tolkien used it as a base for the Lord of the Ring. Only the first two operas were available in french, so I had to look for an english version for the other two. That was my first big classical read in English if we don't count 1984, but it was not harder to read than, let's say, Racine or Baudelaire.

Now for Dante's Divine Comedy

Inferno is the only interesting one. The other two are boring unless you can pick out the satire.
