Same applies for Regigigas, too. The one you can capture at Snowpoint Temple won't unlock the three hidden caves throughout Sinnoh containing Regice, Registeel and Regirock. A Regigigas distributed through events will unlock these caves, however.
What's the point of this? Don't you need the three Regis to fight Regigigas anyway?
Yeah, agreed.
But Platinum is kinda on the borderline of being a DSi game - a lot of players will probably buy it with a DSi, especially over here where the DSi will be out before Platinum. Without the GBA slot, the three Regis are essentially unobtainable. It's the same reason why the Legendary Birds also now roam the routes of post-E4 Platinum, they'll be hit by the loss of GBA too.
On a side note, they've chosen the birds to put in Platinum despite the fact that the Johto legendaries are very nearly impossible to obtain already. Getting Ho-oh and Lugia onto Platinum would require you to play Colusseum/Gale Of Darkness to 100% completion; trade them to a GBA Cockfighting Society game completed enough to have recieved the National Pokédex; and then Pal Park it to Platinum.
Same goes for the legendary beasts and Johto starters, although they can be obtained on GBA without Collus/GoD. But only one-per-savegame, and they're notoriously hard to get - starters require you to complete the Hoenn Pokédex in Emerald (and then you're allowed to choose ONE of them); and just one of the dogs will roam around Kanto in FireRed/LeafGreen post-NatDex, dependant on which starter you picked. Oh yeah, and if you're into the Cockfighting Society metagame, that dog's stats are picked as soon as you hit New Game. So if you want something with the right nature and IVs, you either get Colluseum or you play through THE ENTIRE GAME for each capture and stat check.
Why am I saying all this? For me, if nothing else, this pretty much confirms that some solution to this major gap in DPPt's Pokédex (a lot of the normal Johto-based 'mon are also tricky to get without GBA) is on it's way. Gold/Silver DS, anyone?
