So, how about a general science thread?

Just post anything related to the exact sciences: new discoveries, interesting facts, questions about how stuff works, discussion about new theories, creating your own wacky theories, troll science, you may even post your homework on here for all I care, I(or someone else) might just be bored enough to help you. No guarantees on correctness though.

Discussions aren't required to be 100% serious, as long as they're related to science. Math is okay, pseudosciences aren't.

Basic rules:

1. Absolutely no discussions about ethics in any way. Stem cell research, animal testing,... it's a nono. Those go under Taboo Topics.
2. In discussions, try to back up your arguments with reliable sources.
3. If somebody asks a seemingly stupid question, don't mock them for it. I don't want people to be afraid to ask.
4. Use common sense and be polite.

I guess I'll start off with some random trivia that happens to pop into my mind.

- Fast moving clocks tick slower and get behind on stationary clocks.

- When a stream of air in a tube is forced through a narrow opening, the pressure in that narrow part is actually lower than in the rest of the tube.

- Viruses and prions are on the very border between matter and organisms, and usually are considered former.

- New, controversial and unproven theory on butterflies: they were created as a symbiosis between two different organisms: something that resembles the caterpillar and the butterfly. The theory is similar to the endosymbiosis theory(don't know if that's what it's called in English) if you're familiar with that.

I'll probably add some things if response is low.

Can you like, go into more detail on the butterfly theory? I want to hear it.

In other news I am currently breeding fruit flies in my Genetics Lab in order to see how the white-eyed mutation is inherited. I'm on the third generation right now and two additional eye colors have emerged! We originally just had red (wild-type) and white, but now we ALSO have brown and orange-colored eyes. It's wicked cool but I have no idea how to explain it, aha.

Anyone care to discuss theories on the universe?

Holy shit I did the exact same experiment 2 weeks ago. The only explanation for those unexpected phenotypes is mutation I think, so you just got lucky. Or unlucky, since you now probably have to add that to the report.

'Bout butterfly theory: it's only an anecdote my professor talked about during class, so I don't have notes or anything on it, but I'll try my best to remember some more details.

Butterflies are pretty odd beings, one of the few that under go such a complete metamorphosis after birth. When examining the development within the cocoon, it was discovered that the original dies almost completely, and the butterfly is created from a small group of stem cells that are left (this isn't the theory, it's an observed occurrence). In a sense, the caterpillar dies, and the butterfly is born.

It's hard to explain how this life cycle could have emerged with only evolution, so symbiosis was proposed. As mentioned before though, the theory is still in early development stages.

Last time I did science in school someone ended up in hospital (It wasn't really my fault though) so um not many people trust me anymore hahahahahha but I like science, infact it's one of my best subjects and for options I'm doing Triple Science although idk how handy that will be as I don't know if I want to go down the scientific path just yet (I may go down the medical one, who knows).

As far as I know, basic scientific knowledge is a must to pursue medical ventures. I've thought about going down that path as well.

Mhm, specifically Biology and Chemistry (I think) so for A level I don't think I'll take Physchics as Maths isn't my strongest subject, my sister is taking Physics and Chem, Further Maths and English Lit for A Level and I'm like 'what you want to carry on doing maths' haha.

Very well.

I had a thought about our collision course with Andromeda.
I'm not sure whether which will happen first, the expansion of the sun or us colliding with the galaxy.
None of it matters seeing as the human race will probably be extinct by then, but it's fun to think about.
Also, I watched a discussion regarding the creation of the universe. Some have said crunch, others bang, some have said both.
Anyone's opinion about that little incident?

I saw a TV program where they showed our galaxy crashing into another galaxy, it might have been andromeda but I don't remember

Basically they fling some shit around then make a bigger galaxy

I don't know much about the Big Crunch, the wikipedia article did make me remember the principle behind it though. It's kind of hard to predict when mankind will go extinct, it's all dependent on how well we can keep adapting to changing circumstances. Predicting if an expanding Sun or galaxy collapse will happen first is quite hard, seeiing as both events are still about 4.5 billion years away.

What I've had thoughts about is that, seeing as the empty space surrounding our universe might be infinite, and it probably is, since it's hard to imagine anything forming the borders, it might be plausible that a ridiculous distance away from our universe, the circumstances might have been right for another Big Bang to occur. Thus creating a "multiverse".

Yes. Not debating whether it's a useful investment of cheddar though.

Science is cool because it encompasses so many things

Observing caterpillars for nine months is science

Attaching rockets to a car and slamming it into a steel wall is also science

They don't retest their experiments enough for most of them to be considered accurate or conclusive
