Grenades and landmines are questionable, yet useful in their own way. Like you said, land mines are mostly intended to incapacitate instead of kill. Not just wound. Incapacitate. A zed that lost both legs is a pretty useless zed to me. Apply this to a minefield, and you've got a pretty big group of crawlers you can deal with a lot easier.
Most machine guns use 7.62 NATO rounds. Some, including the M2, use .50 caliber rounds. Do you know how much of a punch a .50 cal packs? It is not pretty. That is ammo you would leave behind because it is "pointless" to use on a horde. That is ammo I would use because of the chunky salsa rule.
To round this little story up: I don't want to hear you calling a weapon "pointless" ever again. A firearm is never pointless. A firearm is designed from the ground up to ruin someone's day. Transferring that principle to a zombie is not hard.
Well, once you down a zed, you need a clean up crew. Someone gets cocky since, hey, we're just dealing with crawlers here, and NOM. Easier to kill them outright.
The reason I call machine guns pointless is that there is no point to have them. The military
will have and use them, and they will kill zombies. Problems arise with the, shall we say, consistency of the corpses. Even a big ol' NATO can pass through a decayed corpse leaving a clean hole, rather than the desired "salsa" effect. Since zombies are partially decomposed, the flesh won't stick together as well and won't rip apart as much. In addition, once the people on machine gun duty get panicky or arrogant, they flip the switch to full-auto and "haul booty." Ammo gets wasted, zeds don't get killed, humans die.
Ruining a zombie's day is much harder than ruining a human's. Firearms are designed to kill by the ways we know kill humans: organ damage, hemorrhaging, internal bleeding, etc. Headshots are not their exclusive function. There's a lot they
can do with machine guns, grenade launchers, and the rest. The question is, once you take into account mental conditions, what
will they do?
