I'm terrible, My first thought when I read this was "or earthquakes."

I was sticking to the fictional threats to certain cities, but yeah.

Move to England: ALIEN INVASIONS EVERYWHERE
Move to Japan: Monsters, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, and nuclear reactors
Stay in America: Zombies, fat apocalypse

Sarah Palin is working on this issue for all of northern North America.

Grenades and landmines are questionable, yet useful in their own way. Like you said, land mines are mostly intended to incapacitate instead of kill. Not just wound. Incapacitate. A zed that lost both legs is a pretty useless zed to me. Apply this to a minefield, and you've got a pretty big group of crawlers you can deal with a lot easier.

Most machine guns use 7.62 NATO rounds. Some, including the M2, use .50 caliber rounds. Do you know how much of a punch a .50 cal packs? It is not pretty. That is ammo you would leave behind because it is "pointless" to use on a horde. That is ammo I would use because of the chunky salsa rule.

To round this little story up: I don't want to hear you calling a weapon "pointless" ever again. A firearm is never pointless. A firearm is designed from the ground up to ruin someone's day. Transferring that principle to a zombie is not hard.

Well, once you down a zed, you need a clean up crew. Someone gets cocky since, hey, we're just dealing with crawlers here, and NOM. Easier to kill them outright.
The reason I call machine guns pointless is that there is no point to have them. The military will have and use them, and they will kill zombies. Problems arise with the, shall we say, consistency of the corpses. Even a big ol' NATO can pass through a decayed corpse leaving a clean hole, rather than the desired "salsa" effect. Since zombies are partially decomposed, the flesh won't stick together as well and won't rip apart as much. In addition, once the people on machine gun duty get panicky or arrogant, they flip the switch to full-auto and "haul booty." Ammo gets wasted, zeds don't get killed, humans die.
Ruining a zombie's day is much harder than ruining a human's. Firearms are designed to kill by the ways we know kill humans: organ damage, hemorrhaging, internal bleeding, etc. Headshots are not their exclusive function. There's a lot they can do with machine guns, grenade launchers, and the rest. The question is, once you take into account mental conditions, what will they do?

You seem to keep thinking soldiers are going to break ranks in fear. Here's the thing, they won't. Even when marching into a battlefield none of them will turn until the order is given to retreat. That's part of being a trained military.

Seriously stop while you're ahead. You don't know anything about weaponry, you don't know anything about US soldiers, and you apparently don't know anything about how easily destroyed decaying stuff is.

OK, 3 years of hobby-level psychology study, reading several works on a) the nature of zombies and b) the effectiveness of weaponry against said zombies, and many thoughtful, lengthy discussions on the effects of the undead on humanity grant me nothing? Are you saying that the military is trained to fight hordes of the undead, possibly people they know? While there are soldiers cracking under the stress of regular warfare, you claim that there would be no negative effects on the minds of soldiers watching their weapons of destruction falling under the compounding massacre and merciless onslaught of the zombies? I never claimed that the military would fail and be rendered completely useless. I'm simply saying that they aren't ready for this sort of war. Simplicity and utilitarianism is what will defeat a horde, not copious explosives and bulky machine guns.
I stand by what I said before: a squad of zombie veterans armed with simple carbines will be the best equipped for fighting the undead.

The military is trained to fight people who want to kill them, and those people are usually holding guns

They are not going to run like little bitches when faced with a few blood-stained shambling corpses

You're trying to claim to be an expert in a fictional subject. Everything you said? Means absolutely squat because you can theorize all you want but you have no basis for your claims. You are a fool playing at professor.

I've only just realised this thread is a topic for seriously discussing the eventuality of a zombie uprising.

Having dealt with my initial face palming, I'm gonna let you think about bringing fantasy weapons into this fantasy scenario.

For example: fry the bastards with microwave weapons, send in automated vehicles/combat robots, nuke the gorram place, sharks with laser beams, spiders with grenade launchers, etc.

I mean, come on, really.

Also when the guy earlier started talking about zombie veterans, I was thinking he meant pitching 'converted' super zombies against regular zombies.

Zombies vs. zombies; Nobody wins.

Yes, I am claiming to be an expert at a fictional subject, and daisies proud of it. People can be experts at the world of Star Wars, or World of Warcraft, or freakin' Age of Empires. Why is it so implausible that a few other interested subjects and myself have taken the time to honestly think about this?

Your zombie veterans would be people like you and me, yeah? People well-versed in the subject of a zombie apocalypse. We've seen every movie, read every book, we often entertain the thought of what we'd do if the corpses started walking right now.

No, I mean trained individuals who are well-versed in the subject of a zombie apocalypse. I can tell you right now that a group of sheriff deputies at my local police station are zombie experts and would be more than enough should an attack occur.

Quote:
I cannot begin to describe how seriously you underestimate a force whose goal is to wage war. That force has made the art of war their primary objective for at least 200 years. That is two-hundred years of collective experience with regards to killing people.

KILLING. PEOPLE. These are not people, conventional warfare doesn't work the same, and just the sound of zombie moans is enough to drive some people to madness.

The difference is, those are actual things you can actually study. A zombie apocalypse hasn't happened, we know NOTHING about one.

Yet you claim the people who've been through the horrors of an actual war would do worse than a couple of cops and whatever guys you find sitting around in your average city.

Yeah, I might be saying that. With all variables taken into account, people who understand the nature of zombies full enough to face them (I can't shoot a gun, but if I could that might include me) armed with very spartan weaponry would likely fare better than most government action, particularly in terms of the supplies used to confirmed kill ratio.
