Cultural Anthropology with a bunch of right-wing religious nuts who spent half of one class arguing that female genitalia mutilation is wrong. All the time. Always.

(i dropped the class a week later and haven't regretted the decision, it allows me more time to focus on social problems and american literature II)

The teacher was basically trying as hard as she could to get them to pull their head out of their butts and realize that in anthropology two things:

1) Ethnocentrism is not boss.
2) Female genitalia mutilation is culturally-relative (acceptable in non-westernized cultures and semi-westernized cultures rebelling against westernization, not acceptable in westernized cultures)


I mostly sat there trying to keep myself from screaming and running out of the room.

Cooking classes can be scary.The knifes are sharp.

I go to a Catholic school, so in my religion class it's pretty much the same situation. Except instead of genitalia mutilation, it's abortion. ALL. THE GODDAMN. TIME.

I don't know about you, but my dad is a (former, more like--he's jobless and my mother is an elementary school teacher) knife collector.

I know knife safety backwards, forwards, parabolic. I could do the diagonal watusi while holding an open knife and neither I nor my partner would be cut. I am good at opening automatic, semi-automatic, and non-automatic knives. I have less experience properly unsheathing them, but it's not that difficult to do it without cutting yourself.

The key thing to remember is this: guns are weapons (unless you're hunting wild animals, in that case make sure PETA doesn't know), knives are tools.

I've only ever cut myslef badly once since I started cooking.
Bad enough to need stitches but I just super~guled it and kept it clean till it healed.It wasn't a big cut or anything but it was real deep on my finger.
I ruined the food I was cutting.

It's generally (IIRC) less religiously-rooted than general-belief-rooted. Physically it has no purpose except quite high chances of causing infertility, death, or severe disfigurement. It's also a great talking point at parties!
