I comfort myself by thinking it at least spent its last harsh winter inside with us, being spoiled rotten etc. At least he had some good final months, still makes me sad but it's going alot better

The situation is like this. She liked you, but you barely showed interest. She lost interest and decided that staying friends would probably be for the best. She got over her feelings for you while you decide now that you like her and bring up what she already put in the past. If you can't get over those feelings and be fine with just good friends, then you both will never become as close as you first were when you were "best friends".

If you're lying to yourself about getting over your feelings for her, it'll hurt even worse. It's either get over them, or stop speaking to each other.
