I will have to say this on the topic.
Although comics that do not update regularly do tick me off, I am willing to forgive if there is a good enough reason.
I like VGcats the art is good, the jokes are decently funny, however with the recent timing I have to believe that well...it jumped the shark. I can see him giving the 'I have a job excuse' decently for the updates if he only updated once a week, but taking months is a bit much.
3 of my favorite comics only update once a week, and one doesn't even update anymore, it stopped like a year ago.
The first 3, Awkward Zombie, Full Frontal Nerdity, and Cuanta Vida.
The latter? F@NBOY$. Yes, that comic had that big of an effect at me, I don't cry at funerals (I'm kinda the guy who believes that death is better than endless suffering with age)..but...god.
I'm actually starting to tear up just writing this, I have a cold so it might kinda be that, but GOD. That comic was strong, given my past experiences.
Yeah, that's right, the comic that actually had an emotional reaction to of CRYING, I didn't start reading until after it had ended mid-way through an arch.
Of course I can easily give complains to all of the comics, but they wouldn't be ones that are worth mentioning. It would be like adding a jaywalking charge to a serial killer's file of charges.
Awkward Zombie? Art style is a bit in consistent, sometimes it's part of the charm, sometimes it kinda lowers the quality. Still not enough for me to mark it down.
Full frontal? God, these guys make tabletop game references even I don't get, and I run a weekly FATAL game. (Yes you read that right). But the humor and such is good enough for me to get it without actually playing the game, which I believe is the mark of any great comic about games.
Cuanta Vida? Art quality is a tad low, but geeze, it's a good comic. Moves a tad fast for the characters besides the Blu Spy to really build on me though. Still awesome.
See? I just criticized 3 of my top comics, and I could even go on for the next top 3.
QC? Quick updates, humor is a tad repetitive, but this is one of the few comics I actually read for the story, not the jokes.
XKCD? Love the jokes about math and computers, but I have a strong feeling I only get 90% of them cause I'm well...autistic. I think there is a good merit to the crits who say "don't read if you're not a social computer nerd shut-in".
OOTS? Art is decently lacking, and well...let's just say the forums get a little wild at time, and some of the characters are forgettable, but still awesome story and good inspire for my Dnd games.
(Btw did you know the artist for that comic actually worked on the official dnd sourcebook "Dungeonscape?" Yeah that's right, a webcomic artist actually got to work on a WOTC book. But i'm not sure which came first).
And now, I'm going to attack the big one.
Penny Arcade.
Great comic, but sadly, it seems to have gone into kinda a social commentary and game critic mode, using jokes that are repetitive, or at least ones that I don't get. I feel little connection to the characters, and I mostly go there for the news posts, which I actually find much more informative....and yet I read it every time it updates. Why? Because it's a good comic, and gives me a social link to many other people, plus they gave 10k to charity for the hell of it. They're clearly VERY good people.
See, I just tore 7 comics out of what I think of them.
The key to being a good critic is to explain your actions. If you simply say "VGcats sucks" no one will take you seriously, that is how flame wars start.
As far as I am concerned though, all these artists are better than me, and even if I do not truly agree with everything they do, that is the curse of creativity, it is more powerful than logic emotionally, and it can easily have a more powerful effect...but it is never universal in what people think of it.
May you all continue reading your favorite comics and supporting their artists.
