I just started the City in the Sky on TP.
Oh how I hate this temple.
It was the reason why I stopped playing it for a couple years.

I had to have my friend play through the Shadow Temple for me. Damned nightmares of being eaten by ReDeads

The Shadow Temple is an interesting beast. Once you get past the atmosphere and the opening RUN INTO WALLS UNTIL YOU PASS THROUGH ONE puzzle, the dungeon is actually extremely simple and straightforward. It surprised me the first time I actually played it all the way through.

So, the only difficulty of that dungeon is that it's scary. Kind of a predecessor to horror games. That might be a stretch.

Mario 64 is the true skeleton, but w/e.
As it has becomes vestigal and outdated, no, it wouldn't. It would be more akin to a Snake calling its first shed skin overrrated. It was important once, but its outdated and doesn't hold up. Now Majoras Mask, that is a game.

Except that Majora's mask is built entirely on the engine that OoT created, meaning the only real difference is the plot.

Every 3-D game since OoT has re-used its elements in a different way. By no means is it a "shed" shell.

I still hold to my opinion of "I've never played OoT." and I kinda want to, just so I don't get shit for having an opinion on it.

And MM had a few differences from OoT besides plot. like the whole transformation thing, and the timer.

Majora's Mask appeals greatly to a smaller audience, whereas Ocarina of Time has a broader appeal. Majora's Mask is preferred by more 'video games as art' kind of snobs (like myself), but people who I think wouldn't play video games at all know a ton about Ocarina.

Also, Ocarina of Time set up future 3-D Zelda games in the same way that Mario 64 and Metroid Prime did for their respective series. When making the transition between dimensions, there are a lot of changes and big decisions to make. The gameplay changes completely. Platforming may become more messy, combat may become more complicated, and puzzles may become simpler in concept, but much more difficult to figure out. When the developers of Ocarina were working on the game, they knew that they were working with a unique animal, and did their best accordingly.

So, when you think about it, Ocarina of Time is a good game because it exists, and it isn't a complete failure. Which is kind of meritable considering the circumstances, but not when compared to future 3-D Zelda games. Which is rather obvious, really.
