I recently went back and played the first game and discovered that CD Project Red planned out the entire series from the start. Specifically with Eredin showing up during the vision of the white frost after Alvin is killed.

I mean, wasn't it originally a book series? I would have to assume that it was thoroughly plotted out beforehand, considering.

The games take place 5 years after the books and aren't canon according to the author. Though he's just salty that the games are more popular than the books and that he took a small payout when giving the rights to CDPR rather than taking a revenue based payout. I accept them as canon, they fit pretty well within the scope of the books.
