Why is it that asking someone who is obviously a foreigner where they are from, or anything like that is a microagression, and therefore offensive? I always thought that not taking any interest at all in someone was almost the same as brushing them off and saying that they aren't interesting in any way.

Hell, nowadays, you acknowledge a woman is female in any way beyond using the correct pronoun, and that can be interpreted as sexual harassment. I'm not even kidding about that one, either. Ask anyone who has entered the military in the past decade or so. While I was in Ft Benning, going through reception, several guys got in trouble before we even got to basic itself, just by saying a woman was attractive. Granted, it was quiet whistling and comments expected of young, horny guys fresh out of high school.

Now, don't get me wrong, in the military you should act with professionalism as much as possible. But it seems to be that in the civilian world, people are just getting too uptight about daisies near everything. We need to find some sort of middle ground before people are so afraid of offending everyone that nobody talks to each other face-to-face anymore.

Are you suggesting that people shouldn't get in trouble for their immature and inappropriate behavior because then they won't feel free to be immature and inappropriate?

Asking strangers about their origins is rude because it means all you see in them is that they are different or don't belong. You have to take the time to know them as a person before it's appropriate.
Same with telling people they're sexually attractive before you even know them. Whistling at a woman you don't know is basically going "Look at that hot vagina warmer". It's dehumanizing and retrograde. Also no, treating people like (sexual) objects is never excusable and should never be tolerated within any kind of organization, especially the military where there's a horribly high count of rape to begin with.

Why would you even need to acknowledge someone's gender in a formal/professional context? It's rarely relevant.

No, I don't mean to imply those guys weren't doing anything wrong by behaving that way. That specific example wasn't a good one. I actually can't stand hearing guys talk like that, as it makes them look sleazy. As for whistling... Ugh, I fucking HATE whistling. Not even in the context of paying someone a crude compliment, either. It's irritating as hell when someone does so just to get someone's attention, especially in an area with a lot of people. Because then, how the hell is the person whose attention they're trying to get going to know who's whistling, and also know whose attention is desired?


But why is it that people want to believe that someone asking you where you're from is intended to be offensive towards you? What if the person just wants to start a conversation and has nothing else to use as an ice breaker?

I get asked that question all the time, and the only time I find it offensive is when it's asked in a certain tone. Most people, upon hearing me talk, can't guess where I'm from, because I actually try to annunciate and pronounce everything as close to correctly as I know how.

(Also, why is it that you folks are still assuming that I mean the worst thing possible when I say something? Haven't you guys figured it out yet that that isn't the case? If you're confused, just ask without getting rustled about it.)

Next saturday is high school graduation. Most of my coworkers are seniors, which means no one besides me and this one old bitch is available on saturday. So I have to work 10 and a half hours with her. ugh.

It's pretty disturbing how many people are acting smug about that vegan who died climbing Everest.

It's just a local grocery store. It's pretty easy work, so it won't be too bad. I just dread how slowly it will pass.

In a bad depressive episode at the moment.

I've recently been sick from work for 2 weeks and now I'm feeling too horrible to work. Eugh.

I am so fucking tired about being misinformed for degree timeline requirements and people not accepting the credits that I've already passed and that should have transferred. Especially when I'VE ALREADY FUCKING PASSED THE MORE ADVANCED SEQUENCE OF THOSE CLASSES. This could completely fuck up everything and I'm already stressed out and angry and in pain and generally exhausted and I just want to fucking quit.

With just about every kind of wash job I have, I'm told by one person what things need done to the vehicle. I do all that, and later someone else says I didn't do enough, even though the part I didn't do I had already been told I didn't need to do, or I'll end up wasting time on tasks I had been told to do, that I actually wasn't supposed to do.

The most irritating part is that my supervisor is one of the people contributing to this problem.

And almost every time I've tried moving this daisies Titan that I've been dealing with almost all day, people swarm the area with more cars and put them directly in my way so I can't really move, or they'll stand right behind or right in front this MASSIVE FUCKING TRUCK.

I swear, I hate people more and more every day.
