Haven't played Revelations yet, but reaching S-rank with one of the Hoshido siblings (or at least the sisters) in Birthright has them pull out a letter from Mom revealing "Surprise, you're not actually related to them after all!"

Something about your mother having been King Sumeragi's second(?) wife, the Hoshido siblings being the offspring of the first(?) wife, and you being the product of a relationship your mom had had prior to meeting the king. It's not really that clear from what I've played of Birthright so far, and I was honestly very confused when Hinoka's supports had her bringing up your mother having been her step-mom as if it was already established fact.

Also, in the DLC map, Hidden Truths 2, Mikoto is your true mother, but King Sumeragi is not your real father. Corn is the decendent of Anankos (if you've played conquest, you'll remember who he is). not the actual fallen dragon, but its physical form of good conscious (the humanized form of Anankos). But anyways I'm just typing this from memory, so I could be a little off. Basically the reason Corn looks like a dragon is because he/she is is the offspring of one. Also, Lilith is your only blood sister and she is the only person who knows this. Your Hoshidan siblings are really your half-siblings. Unfortunately, this game follows upon the motif that Azura introduces in Revelations -- the agony of not being able to tell the truth no matter how much you want to. Only the player will know the secrets unveiled.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Smash 4 spoiled it before the game even came out in the West.

Is it that surprising though? I mean, it even feels unnecessary in the story.

The Smash intro video was my first look at Corn, and this was my first thought too. "You're a dragon hybrid thingy, how the hell are you related to either human family?"
