Holy shit has anybody here seen the Bruce Lee movie "Game of Death"? It's on Netflix, the bf and I watched it thinking "oh, just some random Bruce Lee movie, classic, you can't go wrong with that, right?" ....we were so, so, so wrong.
Basically, Bruce filmed like half an hour of fight scenes for this movie before he died. Originally they were gonna scrap the movie but the producer said "Nah, fuck it, we can make this work". The end result being that 2 different guys played the protagonist Bruce Lee was meant to play for the majority of the movie, even though only Bruce was credited. They sloppily attempted to hide the fact that these dudes were not Bruce Lee at all, usually by having him wear giant sunglasses, keeping his face in shadow, cutting to generic clips of Bruce's face every so often, and even (worst of all) using a goddamn cardboard cutout of his face at one point. We did not know this going into this movie. We just glimpsed the cardboard cutout in the first 10 minutes and were like wait, what the fuck is going on here... oh shit it's fake Bruce Lee.
Se we watched every minute of this movie just to see what shitty ways the producers tried to mask this guy's face. They even worked it into the plot by having the protagonist get shot in the face and having to get "reconstructive surgery... he may never look the same again". I'm fuckin' dead at this point man, how'd they get away with this shit? And I didn't realize until the very end of the movie when they FINALLY used Bruce Lee's fight scenes that the other guys' fighting styles are so incredibly different too.
But the real, actual, heart-stoppingly worst part? When the protagonist faked his own death, they used ACTUAL FOOTAGE from Bruce Lee's ACTUAL FUCKING FUNERAL. You could see where the footage got slightly grainier and where they cut to the actors.
Later we had a fun time on IMDB learning all the stuff I have just told you guys here. Apparently a lot of actors turned down roles in the film because they thought it was "disrespectful to Bruce Lee's memory". No shit???
On one hand, I'm offended. But part of me is glad I learned a lot more about historic, shitty movies.
