Oh my god, you know how Toby Fox made a Halloween Earthbound hack?

He planned Flowey from that point.

It's also the origin point of Megalovania.

This is actually one of the rare instances of a Earthbound hack having original music, this is the only new track in the hack.

That hack is pretty much Earthbound: Edgy Edition but he was like 15 so I'll let it slide
I posted a video a couple pages back showing how Megalovania has evolved between the hack, Homestuck, and Undertale. I kept it in spoilers because I assumed discussing the track would be spoiling it, but the video does have a picture that spoils part of the story. The video also has a fan remix from a Mother hack based on the original version of the song.

This video features all of the arrangements of Megalovania up until now. The last one is a fan remix paying homage to Toby's Earthbound hack, and is not surprisingly featured in a Mother hack.
It's interesting seeing how the track evolves from Clash with a Doctor/Andonuts' Rage->[S]Wake/MeGaLoVania->Megalovania, seeing how it started out rather simple, one person points out how it has a much angrier feel seeing as that's the literal point of the fight with Andonuts in the hack, and then features electric guitar more prominently, then much more orchestra-esque and recreated from what it was originally.
I hope Toby keeps putting this in any game he creates in the future, with a different arrangement each time.

The fan remix sounds pretty good too, a decent callback to the original while still giving itself its own feel.

It was in Homestuck? No wonder it sounded familiar.
Edit: I just checked my Homestuck albums and yep, there it is, on Vol.6. And two remixes on Land of Fans and Music.

Woah, this mixtape hurts me because Papyrus doesn't sing exactly on tune (I guess that's what "mixtape" implies or something). But since it's so Papyrus, I love it anyway.

In other news, I hate myself for going for another pacifist run, but no healing item allowed. :V (I couldn't bring myself to do a neutral run, which is what I initially wanted)

I can't believe Toby named a track "Burger Truck" just because it sounded so much more significant in German

Speaking of the soundtrack, my one very significant gripe about it is there's way too much resampling. (Stop me if using that term incorrectly.) Tracks use the same melody as other tracks for no particular reason. I can count the number of tracks that don't suffer from this on one hand. There are a few exceptions that do this for a reason and sound good because of it, but most of them seem like Toby just did it so he didn't have to make a full soundtrack of completely original tracks.

Not sure if joking but it does actually have a meaning if you're talking about Burgentrückung.
From a Google translated German wiki page.

Burgentrückung bodaciously translates to King in the Mountain.

"The literary / mythological motif of the king in the mountain can be found in varying degrees in different European cultures. Common to all these ideas that people disappear from the human world without dying, and they continue to live in an underworld, therefore, these are a special form of rapture."

Also, Burger Truck in German would be something like Hamburger last(kraft)wagen.
Don't quote me on that, I used Google.

Also more on it. Bergentrückung is made up of Berg (Mountain) and Entrückung. (Rapture.)

And that was your unscheduled German lesson from someone who's general knowledge of German is Guten tag.

Well, that's egg on my face, that is really significant to the story. I must have gotten mixed up, I know just about as much German as you do.

Well, as a composer, I can explain the reasoning behind Toby's recycling of motives and melodies. Most video games these days are full of variations and rearrangements of the same three to five themes (per game, of course). This allows for a more cohesive soundtrack, rather than just a bunch of random songs. If you played them all together, they would have a common identity and feel like they belong together, even without the game images.

Most old games had like, 12 tracks maximum in the era that Undertale is supposed to be reminiscent of, half of which were generally variations on the other half. Toby has 101 tracks once all the variations (many of which actually have significant instrumentation and compositional differences from each other) are added up. That is a lot of soundtrack to work with and not have some of the tracks sound a bit samey. It's just going to happen, especially when there are different variations that may be fairly close, but are intended for different game paths, so you AREN'T going to hear them both on the same playthrough.

Hey may not be quite as skilled with it as some other game composers (for example, if you don't count the disney rearrangements, the entire KH series' music is just variations off of Dearly Beloved, Sora's Theme, Kairi's Theme, Expositionland theme, Destati), but I wouldn't necessarily expect him to have a skill that developed in all areas, considering I don't think this is his day job, and he may not have had enough training and practice yet. Coming up with a few really good themes and a variation each over a few years is a whole different beast from trying to create a fully-fleshed out, branching soundtrack, which he may not have realized when he set out.

Toby is first and foremost a musician, actually, so making a soundtrack is directly up his alley. In fact, it is indeed his day job at What Pumpkin, seeing as he made the soundtrack for the Hiveswap game.

Ah, my mistake then.
It still might be that it sounded perfectly good to him, though meaning everything except the last comment about my uncertainty over his job is still on the table.
