I wouldn't say that she's a terrible character just for that one scene, but the big reveal that was supposed to make us "ashamed of our words and deeds" is just plain stupid writing in general

"Kojima-san, the word is that they're canning our entire studio but we haven't finished MGS5's plot yet! What do we do? We still need a significant backstory for Quiet!"

Just did the Quiet boss fight myself. Really, really fun and intense segment And has me super interested in where the story is going. Gotta say the posts here are making me nervous because I really like Quiet so far. She's definitely an interesting character so far. Not gonna spoil myself with that video or Aquabat's post, but I'll throw my two cents in once I get there.

To be fair, though, the MGS series has never been 100% serious all the time. One of it's defining characteristics is it's mix of light and dark hearted moments and the humanity of a lot of the characters. I don't know if it's entirely right to criticize the game for not being serious, or for a character not having only serious scenes. Though obviously I don't know what the scene is or it's context or what you mean by serious so I guess there's not much point in me criticizing.

I'm not completely through her story so far, or even really too far into the game in general, but Quiet as a character is actually pretty interesting and cool. She's fairly unique among the cast, and having no dialogue makes her interactions a little more vague, which works really well with the game's theming.

but she's oversexualized to high hell. constantly. every time. two of her unlockable outfits are just her entire body painted gold or silver. whenever she's on mother base, she's sunbathing with her bra undone. the game kind of awkwardly pans to her breasts every time it takes control of the camera. jiggle physics.

and then the "plot reason" for it is so half-assed and dumb that i feel like it would have been better had they just not explained it at all.

i have a feeling that quiet's arc, as a character, is going to be pretty solid and good and i'm not worried too much about it.

quiet's design, and they way she's actually shown during cutscenes, is fucking terrible

Until Dawn is a game, decent too. Cousins got it and we're playing though it. Problem for me they already beat it, and Joe saw a playthough of most of it. Kinda ruins the thing knowing that everyone else knows most of it.

I finished QUBE on Sunday night. My only regret is that I wish it was longer.

also the more and more her bond level grows the more and more the game puts me in really uncomfortable situations with her, which really just miss the mark on sexy and go into "this is making me actively uncomfortable because of how creepy and leering the camera is" so it kind of massively ruins the romance subplot and i am just really glad i have her in an actual outfit now so when she shows me her booty on the ACC it's not quite as awkward.

Be honest, when has a romance subplot in an action-rpg not been cringeworthy?

metal gear is a stealth-action series with basically no rpg elements at all

so i mean, yeah, you're technically correct in that action-rpgs usually do have cringeworthy romance plots

but, that is the wrongest you could go with MGS as a genre

and also kinda misses the point because on script the relationship between snake and quiet is actually pretty decently done, it takes a while to build up, and as it does she progressively gets more useful so you as the player get attached to her and it's not that jarring at all. the issue arises that she's basically fucking naked 100% of the time, and scenes that focus on her, or even when she's doing anything but sniping on missions, her portrayal and actions aren't designed to show her as a character but to instead show off that she's fucking naked hey look at her tits. so instead of these scenes being sexy in any way ever, they come off as predatory. snake clearly cares about quiet as a person, i want to care about quiet as a character, but the game and the focus of a majority of her interactions is entirely on her body, and it's fucking creepy and weird.

Like Vax said, Metal Gear's story has always been wacky and not meant to be taken seriously all the time

Although from what I hear Kojima really bombed hard on the story for this one, though I haven't played the game myself
