Well normally the blood goes somewhere else but it wasn't always appropriate to show that depending on the setting/target audience...

It started as a Japanese old wives' tale that when a man get turned on by a woman, his nose starts bleeding. Eventually, the Japanese adopted this into their anime and manga, and...you know the rest.

Ah.
Well for me all it does it make me squeamish along with questioning the artist's knowledge of body anatomy. To each their own... I guess.
