I never realized how big AZ was in the Fire Emblem community til the last few days, Derp Emblem Daily made a refrence to the what do heron songs really mean comic and YugianBushido recognized it when i made a joke about capes waving majestically in the wind during his twitch stream.

Gods.

I understood Awakening was more casual because if it didn't do well the series was over.

Apparently that didn't mean that it'll move back towards complex when they get new fans.

How is managing weapons hard though? Can I kill him with common weapon? Use. Do I need a stronger one? Use. You could buy good ones at shops in awakening. It wasn't like you could never get seconds.

And Hoshido being more Japanese and being peaceful while the other one is warlike sets off all sorts of bells and shit but eh if the game was good then whatever.

I think this comic explains this whole item conserving business very well.

Really though, Pheonix Mode and super easy mode has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. We'll just get a bunch of new casuals who'll claim Nohr version is the "blackhorse" and "worst of the series" because it wasn't like Awakening, Hoshido, and Sacred Stones.

How would they be able to say that if they're new to the series? That makes no sense.
And Sacred Stones was never considered casual at all.
And the alleged complaints about Nohr would be that it's not like Hoshido and Awakening, so how would that be caused by Phoenix Mode? Phoenix Mode isn't what makes it different.

Why in the world is broadening the demographic so toxic to Fire Emblem fans? You're not hipsters, I hope, so why do you complain about your so-called "niche" series being "casualized"?

While I'm all for broadening the demographic....phoenix mode seems pretty dumb. What's the point of a mode like that in a strategy game? Casual mode at least has the challenge of the unit not gaining any exp from the whole fight so the player has to be considerate of that. Seriously, what is the consequence of the "fallen" unit in Phoenix mode? If anything, it is detrimental to the player for the fact it offers no risk, so it has no sense of reward. No sense that you really worked for that victory. You just threw yourself at a brick wall until it broke.

– Phoenix Mode is designed for newcomers; not existing Fire Emblem fans

The point is for newcomers to play on Phoenix Mode if they're unsure if the challenge is right for them. This way, they learn how not to run headfirst into danger, and how to plan more carefully. Then, they can strive for a higher difficulty on another playthrough.

And for the record, Super Robot Wars has done it before.

Causal mode fits the role just fine though. You are not really forever punished for mistakes, but do get a consequence for it. And I don't care if other games have done it before. The next Touhou game (Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom) has something kind of similar to this called Pointdevice mode. It's different genre I know, but it's the best example I can personally relate to. You only have 1 life and if you die you go back to the last check point. Yes, it helps both new and old comers learn the game better (and LoLK is hard enough that it needs it). But even with that it does have a consequence for using it, you lose power each time you die and it adds up over time. Yeah big whoop, but at least it's something. Since it's only the demo out we don't know as of yet if it affects the ending. At first I wasn't too keen on it, but it grew on me after I played with it a bit. Hey, maybe Phoenix mode will grow on the community soon too. But as of now, Causal mode was created for this reason, a way to learn the game without it being too frustrating. Phoenix mode is just redundant. I, personally, also think it treats newcomers like idiots.

Fire Emblem has always been considered kind of a hardcore series to begin with. Making it too casual could be the exact opposite problem the series could fall into and that could be what people are apprehensive of.

Well, a lot of new people joined the fandom when Awakening came, right? Plus Sacred Stones was free on the Ambassador Program thingie, so people would be used to world maps and grinding and such. Nohr returns to FE's harder times while Hoshido stays in Weenie Hut Jr Mode, so Nohr probably would/could be considered a blackhorse by the Awakening only noobs.

Ever play Thracia 776? I haven't but I heard it was a ball buster. I need to get around to playing that one day.
