Just got back from Ultron. A little too fast-paced and a little too convenient but still pop flyin' I saw it. Now back to waiting forever for Star Wars and Civil War.

I was also not expecting the sassy Ultron and am also pleased by the idea and execution.

I guess I'm the only one who disliked that. I thought it felt a little forced and made the character lack uniqueness, having the same sense of humour that's now become a trademark of Marvel CU writing. Still enjoyed the movie though.

So in Agents of S.h.i.e.l.d, they explained Where the dang Helicarrier was hiding.

Since he's A.I. I expected him to have the usual robot personality: super logical, "what is taste?", etc. It surprised me to find that he's probably the most unhinged and Joker-like villain we've seen in Marvel movies so far and I can't think of a direct comparison that makes it less unique. Red Skull was hyper focused on world domination as you might expect from a 40's villain. Loki had a somewhat similarly twisted sense of humor but was much more refined and...I dunno, withdrawn. Not so in-your-face.

Sloth and I are watching a Bollywood movie called Dhoom 3. We have never even heard of Dhoom 1 or 2, but after the 15-minute exposition backstory scene (yes, this is pretty typical of Indian media), the first main story scene involves someone performing a tightrope walk with a motorcycle. It is full-on, unashamed, undisguised Rule of Cool. This is glorious.
Also, we are not sure if the villain is supposed to be a villain, or just a heist-driven antihero, since he's had 80% of the development and screen time. He's even got a pretty love interest. Although this might be because the hero and sidekick already got all of their development in the first and second movie.

For some reason I never realized Quicksilver = Mercury until after watching Avengers: AoU.

Re: Ultron, i loved his voice, it was the perfect supervillian voice. As for his actual dialogue I think they made him a bit more chatty and gave him the sense of humor so that it would be easier to see how unhinged he was, especially compared to the cool calmness of Jarvis/Vision. ...Also, all hail overlord Jarvis.

the easier explanation though is that he just inherited Tony's sass.

I liked Ultron's personality. It might be more of what we've come to expect from Whedon's Marvelverse, but as far as "AI gains sentience and wants to annihilate humanity," it's a comparatively fresh direction. He really acts like a child who believes he is serving a compassionate goal. Look at how hurt he is when the twins leave him. He's a baby, unable to realize the consequences of his actions.

Saw Ultron, was fun but had quite a bit of flaws.

I would've liked more focus on the infinity stone. I was super stoked when I saw it and was pop flyin' when it was confirmed what it was, I'm glad I recognised its resemblance to Guardians of the Galaxy. It felt like it got really bumped down in importance, much less important than its sibling in GotG.

I really did not like the Bruce x Nat romance subplot. It felt forced, cheesy and out of place. It also felt inconsistent with the subtle romantic hits between Hawkeye and Nat in the previous film, it's like that never happened and it felt inconsistent with how Nat was afraid of Bruce in the previous film.

I feel disappointed that Pietro died, I liked him and he could've provided witty banter between him and Hawkeye in future films.
I liked Ultron as well, his attitude was entertaining and provided an interesting opposition.

Also, I REALLY disliked Nat for saying she was a monster simply because she's infertile. Like wow Whedon, get off your fucking "Women are only good if they make babies" high horse.

I.... didn't see it that way at all. I think she called herself a monster because she was born and raised to be a killer, the infertility was just kind of an added punctuation to that end.

But I agree the romance thing was really... odd. I think the movie could have been just fine without it, or maybe just with subtler hints at it. I like the idea that Nat and Bruce share some kind of bond, but I think that it was really rushed. Like, that conversation about how neither of them can make babies? What? Didn't you just find out you were into each other?

That said I still think it was a great movie, looking forward to the next one.

Well, I agree that the raised to be assassin would make someone feel like they are a monster but to me, the infertile thing felt like it was emphasized. I guess I might just be reading too much into it but to me it sounded like the infertility was such a big part of her being a monster, but I can't really back that up with anything.

Edit: I also want to say that Natasha felt very disconnected from the rest of the Avengers. Apart from the moments with Hawkeye's children and a few comments, she only really interacted for Bruce so I got the feeling she was more of a love interest for Bruce rather than an Avenger.

Considering her past and whatnot the disconnect really doesn't surprise me. She thinks she's a monster because of what she was made to be and what she's done, he thinks he's a monster because of what he could do if he's not careful. Everyone else is more or less a shining beacon of justice in some form and even Hawkeye's revealed to be a regular Joe Familyman off the job.

That probably also explains the reveal about the infertility, I think. She knows that even the other shady Avenger has a slice of normalcy that she won't. Even if she pulls out of the business and never looks back her past has scarred her so thoroughly that she can't have a family of her own like everyone else. I don't have a hard time believing that side of it might frighten her a bit more.
