Okay, well, you guys seem to be knowledgeable in this area, so what do you suggest I get?
(btw, I'm planning on using it for lots of Steam games, as well as a heavily modded Minecraft (100+ proletariats))

The best option is to build your own, which will require you to do some research. This is a pretty good starting point. This is an alright reference point.

For prebuilts, it's dependent entirely on what's available in your area so you'll still need to shop around yourself. I think for your purposes you should be looking at specs equivalent or better than core i5 + gtx 750ti. If you can find that for 800$ or less it's an alright deal I think. You can of course aim higher if your budget allows it.

For laptops, can't really help you there, laptops aren't really suited for gaming. There are no right answers, just less terrible ones. Even alienware might not be that bad if you're willing to blow a lot of cheddar.

Just gonna chip in that it's 2015 and a Laptop is a PC. Sure, a high-end laptop can't compete with a high-end PC - but if your laptop has the specs you need, it has the specs you need. Mobile graphics cards aren't all that bad anymore, even APUs do a fine job these days. However it is true that for a given amount of cheddar, you get more power from a tower PC than from a laptop. Although monitors cost cheddar, too.
My point is, a laptop is perfectly fine to play games unless you want the highest performance you could possibly get.
What you can't really do with a laptop is to build your own, however. You're basically stuck at pre-built systems, where you're lucky if you can replace the RAM or harddrive, if anything.

I have yet to see a gaming laptop that doesn't have overheating issues.

While you're right, many people make gaming laptops work for them.
Let's be honest here. This is Terraria. It's not going to require a a powerful gaming pc to run.

Yeah for Terraria purposes(which is the subject of this thread, come on people, stop being off-topic) any laptop you could buy for over $300 would most likely run Terraria and the majority of games just fine, except for AAA 3D world games that are heavily intensive.

Ok, for some reason Terraria works on my home computer, despite the fact that is has less free data space than the computer it DIDN'T work on, and was running the same operating system (Windows Vista). Maybe my computer has a better processor? I don't know. What I DO know is that I do NOT LIKE THE CRIMSON!

Also, I got super lucky with ore generation. Each ore my world generated is the 'slightly-better-than-the-alternative' ore. Specifically, tin, lead, tungsten, and platinum. b(^.^)d

I've brought up the idea of an AZ Terraria night, but it always ends too soon.

Oh, why is that? I guess the worlds are smaller than minecraft since they're in 2d.

Minecraft is procedurally generated, so you can basically have an infinite world (not counting the cutoffs at around 2-3 million). Terraria generates the whole world at once, which lets it make absolutely sure that you get certain structures in your world (Dungeon, Lizhard Temple, Living Tree). I do feel the need to point out that Terraria's underground is a LOT deeper than Minecraft's. MC has about 70 blocks until you hit bedrock. Terraria goes down more than 1500 blocks.

You guys remember when I said that I was really lucky with worldgen? I got two Living Trees, and neither of them go down more than 20 blocks. No Living Loom for me!

People just lose interest after a while, and I doubt anyone who can run a decent server would be interested.

People would come on like, once and then do other things.
