My DS fell down and now has a line of kinda dead pixels on the top screen.

It's been a few years now (like five or so), but I dropped my DS Lite and it ended up with a few dead pixels and the touchscreen was off in calibration by like two inches, and there was no way to fix it in the software.

Called up Nintendo, shipped out my system, they sent me back a new system. Or they hilariously cleaned mine. It was a white system and would get tiny bits of dirt around the edges of the clear plastic case that goes around the whole thing.

That was all out of warranty, too. Nintendo is A+ in customer service, it wouldn't hurt to at least call.

I know some people who say it intentionally like that as a joke (particularly people I know who follow Sips (youtuber)).

Then this should work: go in a chatroom, and remove your game from the system. The screen is gonna turn PANK/ purple, and if you rub against the dead pixels they should disappear.
