I'm playing Link Between Worlds.

Holy balls the path up to the ice dungeon has cheap-booty platforming. A giant statue on an icy platform trying to crush you? A path appears to be two-way until you get to a part where there's no way to leave a wall without falling to your doom?

The ice dungeon made me want to scream.

I assure you, it's all worth it in the end. After all, you get to save all those lovable, memorable characters you met during your quest, like…

…uh…

…well, you get to explore all these interesting, imaginative new locations, like…

…um…

…okay, but you have to keep playing because the game gives such great development to the Zelda mythos. Without this game, we wouldn't know that…

…why do so many people think ALBW is so great?

It's fun, mostly.

Turning into a painting is a great new puzzle mechanic, and makes exploration of the world itself into a puzzle at times.

Yes, that was a fun gimmick, and they had some good puzzles based around it. For the most part, aside from being too easy in most parts, the gameplay was pretty good. Still, the writing was absolute shit and the game's creators decided to forgo any creativity in favor of pandering to gamers' nostalgia. It was insulting and a huge step backwards for the series. It was the Other M of Zelda.

That said, seeing what they've released so far on Zelda U, along with seeing how hard they worked on MM3D, has given me hope for the future of the series.

Is this just another thinly-veiled rant about how it "retconned" the Oracle games and whatnot?

No, I wasn't going to bring that up...even though it did.

Yeah, when IGN or whoever posted that list of the top 25 3DS games, I was baffled that they named ALBW as #1. It definitely did not feel like Best 3DS Game material.

The puzzles were fun, and as someone who never played ALttP I didn't see much in-your-face nostalgia. I'm sure it was there, but it didn't feel over the top to me.

The fact that you can do the dungeons in any order was an improvement in many ways, but the fact is that doing so hindered the writing quality a lot. There was some interesting stuff there, but they didn't go far enough in my opinion. I would much rather have better writing than nonlinear dungeon sequences.

You still can get the Stone Mask before the Gerudo Pirates, right?
Because if they changed that, I think I won't be able to survive there, I've never done it without said mask, and it's more fun to just walk up to Gerudos and randomly slash them.
Also PBG's Stone Mask song.

I'm pretty disappointed in how they dumbed down some of the gossip stones' information. I liked how some of them used to give you factoids about some of the masks (like how the All-Night Mask was originally used as a torture device) instead of just reminding you who you got them from.

Yeah, miss the random Info too. Also apparently one of the item slots is used for the fishing rod, which is pointless from what I've figured out. I need to do the last Poe guy mission then I have everything except for the stuff found in the Moon.

Overall, I think this was a fantastic remake. I'm not entirely pop flyin' with some of the changes they made, but if I had to pick a version of Majora's Mask to replay, I'd definitely choose this one. I think I'll do that...maybe I'll try a 3-heart run...

I got to Great Bay and then started sidequesting like mad because I didn't want to do the pirate fortress...

I'll do it tomorrow though, since I finally have time after a crazy work week.

EDIT: Well, apparently you can warp to the boss room even if you didn't actually beat the boss.

I was fighting Gyorg and realized I didn't have enough time to win, but I had gotten all the fairies and I wanted my double defense, darn it. So I warped out, visited the Fairy Fountain, and then reset time. When I went back to the temple, fully prepared to redo that slogfest, it gave me the message to warp to the boss room right away.

I don't know if that was in the original, but if it's a change they added in the remake then I'm all for it.
