Those look really good - your art style preserves the original designs while still putting a somewhat sinister twist to them (that Gideon gives me shivers... brr). Also, it's nice to see artwork of the creatures from Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained.

This is one of my most favorite things I've done this semester. What do you think AZ?

I've seen people do amazing things with GIMP and Photoshop. You could give a whole bunch of programs and see what you're most comfortable with. It also kinda depends on what kinda art you're doing. Art that requires outlines is easiest on Sai for example (if you ask me anyway).

Gimp is not very good for painting and drawing, it's an editing and designing tool first and foremost, and it is barely developed anymore. I'd recommend Krita instead. It's free as well, but it has a better UI and is actually made for painting, and it's rapidly improving. Also it keeps getting praise for its brushes.

It really depends. This artist has definitely mastered GIMP, and is still using it today. It definitely takes some mastery for the more unconventional programs, but it's not impossible.

Trying this out right now to see if it outperforms my free Painter Essentials 4 in all the ways I hope it will (largely to do with brushes, so thanks for mentioning that specific point.)

EDIT: So far, I can't even get it to create a document without locking up.
EDIT 2: Got a document, but jesus christ, this application runs absurdly slowly. I can watch the cursor finish drawing the line a full two seconds after I"ve removed my stylus.

@Angelic: The detail in that is pretty sweet. Watch out for tangents though, the bottom of the mountain disappears into the railing.

What kinda drawing are you intending to do? Also what equipment you got? Doesn't hurt to download a bunch of things and try em out if they're free. I was always a big fan of open canvas 1.1, still am actually.

Also I have been drawing a little.

Are you using the Windows version? It was only ported recently, but I thought it was stable enough already. There should be an option to enable/disable OpenGL, it might help.

edit: I just installed it on a school computer (i.e. not the most powerful thing) and it works very well with or without OpenGL. Are you sure you picked the latest version? The download page shows the oldest builds first for some reason. The one you want is either this one (x32) or this one (x64)

well I've also been looking around for pretty cheap tablets (I've got finals and shit coming up so the looking hasn't been that hard) all I've really looked at was the wacom site and I'm not really willing to spend on anything over $100

Recently completed the model for another creature.
Concept Art

Decided not to rig this one so I posed it instead. Now I need to UV map it for coloring and texturing. Ugh.

Hm I think you'd be able to get a wacom bamboo 8x6 for around that much? It's been a while since I looked at tablets myself.

I was finally able to get a new pen tablet, but the problem is is that it doesn't work on SAI. The pressure sensitivity is broken and it does the thing where it doesn't change direction for a split second. As in, if I try to draw a tiny circle, the side I start at will be flat. It works on Photoshop just fine. I remember having this problem before, but I don't remember how to fix it. I've updated my drivers.

Edit: Apparently it was conflicting with the drivers of my old tablet. Fixed it!
