That comic is terrible because it complains about women being generalized and then generalizes women. There is no actual universal beauty standard for either gender, it's all just a marketing ploy to get you to buy hair products and deoderant.

Videogames aren't more sexist than any other mainstream medium, horribly written, cliched characters are sadly the norm. The cliches are sexist because society is sexist, but mostly because sex sells (to both genders).

God daisies that one got me.

I'm loving this playthrough just because the game seems so bizarre to me, like how would you feel if after a doctor finished removing a shard of glass from your sternum he turns to you and is like "well dang, only got a C on that operation, thought it deserved at least a B". I have no idea why this hospital is letting you operate on people you're a terrible surgeon.

Oh, just wait, the game gets even more ridiculous. We'll be going full-speed ahead on the batshit crazy train soon.

dayum, you mean the game has stuff ta appeal ta the core audience? ya mean the characters other than the mc got 1-dimensional personalities? daaaayum. there's games meant ta appeal ta women. they ain't common because it's mostly men playing video games, but if ya for some reason can't play muscle man saves the world 2, ya still got plenty of neutral or women-aimed games.

Women, namely adult women, are now the majority gamer demographic. Plus, the ratio of women gamers to men gamers has been close to 50/50 for a long time. And what games can you think of that are only meant to appeal to women, as opposed to, say, a 'general' audience or just men? You aren't allowed to name off any Barbie or Littlest Pet Shop games.

I dunno mayn, I know chicks that are inta that. they ain't the target audience, but hey.

More power to them. It doesn't change the fact that the devs did not make the game 'for' them. Guys are allowed to enjoy My Little Pony (I guess) even though it wasn't made for them.

dayum nice strawman comic

How can it be a strawman comic when the man's line is verbatim something I hear people say ALL THE TIME?
Quote:
The straw man fallacy occurs in the following pattern of argument:

Person 1 asserts proposition X.
Person 2 argues against a false but superficially similar proposition Y, as if that were an argument against Person 1's position.
This reasoning is a fallacy of relevance: it fails to address the proposition in question by misrepresenting the opposing position.

Also the comic wasn't originally from tumblr you screwball

in conclusion, they's plenty of games made fo women, or made neutral. games made fo men are just easier ta see, cause it's mostly men playin em and they get mo marketin. ain't nothin ta complain about

You don't think that developers and advertisers ignoring HALF of their demographic is something to complain about?

Edit: The video Boompig posted is a good watch.

every time I see dese statistics, they count facebook and phone games. can't take em seriously.
as for yer second point, I got 2 things. 1: that last line is like sayin you can't count dbz and naruto games as things meant to appeal ta boys. 2: plenty of VNs are made just fo women.

just cause some people say it don't mean it's an opinion shared by an entire opposition. that's like me makin some stick figure comic with a woman shoutin about castratin all men. I hear that all the time, but I don't go applyin it to every feminist, because they ain't all like that.

which half are they ignorin, cause I'm pretty sure the demographic they want is "teenagers and young adult men" for the most part

My POINT with saying that 'barbie and littlest pet shop doesn't count' is that there are plenty of games aimed at LITTLE GIRLS (NOT women, who we are discussing the objectification of) from girl toy franchises, but they exist only as moneygrabs for young girls who are a fan of that. They are made by toy companies and not game companies. Also, you're kind of comparing two different age groups there.

Oh, and why did you to count the Barbie and Pet Shop games, but not the casual and facebook games? Games are games, whether you like that or not. I could very well say 'hurr hurr Call of Duty isn't a game' but we both know that isn't true. Many women only play casual games, yes, but plenty of other women branch out into other games because they were first introduced to casual games. Or, they could be like me, and got started on video games because of what I guess you'd count as "real" games like King's Quest and Pokemon.
Let's not forget that there are men who only play casual and facebook games on the male side of the statistics as well.

No single comic can represent the views and opinions of every single person on the globe. Comparing a comic about objectification to a comic about extremist man-hating feminists (who, by the way, are about as numerous as the members of the Westboro Baptist Church) is basically comparing a sincere social issue to a piece of parody-level propaganda. There is no point to make in comparing the two things.
Also, what I've been getting from you is that generalizing things is bad, but it's okay when you do it. Because I'm seeing a lot of generalizing from you.

And...you have no problem with this? You have no problem with this 'boys club only' mindset? I think that's something that needs to be changed, because as you can see, A LOT OF PEOPLE have a problem with it!

well if ya wanna go ahead and count those facebook and phone games: there's ya games aimed at women.

it's still a dumb comic whose only point seems to be "fuck these games made fo men where the games made fo me" when those games already out there. or better yet, just playin games ya like and not carin who they made for. if ya need a game to be specifically aimed at women, ya got some pretty shallow taste.

where the fuck you gettin that boys club shit from. major devs make games aimed at men cause that's what sells, mayn. there's still plenty a games out there whose target audience is "people who like games." go play those, I do.

They are games aimed at a casual market, aka GENERAL AUDIENCES. Most casual games are. The idea that women are only interested in social and casual games is another major issue with the game industry and part of the reason that developers don't give a fuck about making anything 'serious' for a female audience, instead pandering over and over again to straight males who get their rocks off when they see a pair of tiddies.

Ah yes, because the 5% of good games made for women that already exist are all I will ever need. I shouldn't ask for more games for women because WE ALREADY HAVE THEM! I guess that means devs can stop making games for men, too. Cut that crap, dude.

What I NEED is for game developers to realize that there are women in their audience who want to be able to play a game that respects them instead of treating them like a fucking prop for the male character. A game doesn't have to be aimed specifically at women to not be sexist douchebro mcgee material. Chell from Portal? She was awesome. The portal developers didn't need to put Chell in a skimpy costume to sell their game to a male audience, and they didn't pander to the 'teehee sparkly PANK girly girl' stereotype to get a female audience. It was for everyone and everyone loved it.
It's not shallow to want to play a game without getting some horny straight guy's sexual fantasy forced onto me and have the game tell me "THIS is what you want".

I tend to interpret "because that's what sells" as whiny butthurt and resistance to any and all forms of change.
"Hey, I have a great idea, why don't we start making more games with 3D models?"
"No, that will never make any cheddar. Pixels and 2D graphics sell. There's no point in doing something else."

Fucking lameass excuse.

I am asexual. I could not care less about sex appeal for women. I care about women being treated like blow up sex dolls and I care about the whiny pissbaby men who dismiss that as an issue.
Also, games don't have to be 'specifically' made for sex appeal to contain sex appeal (and objectification, and sexism, and sex fantasies, etc etc ETC). Shocking, I know.

But it's good to know that you completely missed the point of everything I've said.

That doesn't mean it's not something that needs to be addressed.

yes it does mayn. mainstream games are gonna have dat kinda thing til market trends change. it's an industry to dem, not a hobby. all da hobby devs ain't mainstream. before ya go on about how "we gotta make da trend change now" it already be changin. ya movin from ya mainstream mediocre shootan games like calla duty and godda war, ta ya mainstream mediocre story/cinematic games like da last of us an uncharted. small change but it'll change mo.
