The term bastard sword specifically refers to a 1.5 handed sword that's balanced for both one handed and two handed use, 'bastard' here meaning irregular.

The game features a zweihänder like I expected, I think I'll get one, I used it extensively in both DeS and DaS.

I'm rocking the Halberd at the moment but it kinda seems to suck. I liked it more in DaS.

It was handy in DeS but the reach meant that I hit walls a lot, which won't do in this game.

The halberd is an awesome weapon BUT you need to be at the right distance to use it properly. If anything but the blade hits the enemy it will not do full damage.

Okay, Sorceror is shaping up to be my main. The major roadblock was Executioner Chariot because fuck that. But I got through it, after using all my Effigies, then went and did Skeleton Lords with some Sunbros. Someone told me to use an Ascetic after that though, then kill Skeleton Lords again, so I did that and got a ring that improves my casting speed. Now if I could put out some respectable damage I'd be set.

I figured as much but the thing I have the most problems with is the slow recovery after swinging.

All halberds have a slow recovery if they miss. If a halberd hits, you recover really really fast.

At least, that's how it it worked in DS1, I haven't fucked around with halberd class weapons in DS2 but I can't imagine it'd change too much.

That no longer seems to be the case in DS2, though I haven't experimented with it enough. I do know that I often have a hard time getting a hit in without getting hit in return.

it still is, if you actually hit someone with it, it recovers decently fast.

keep in mind tho that the strong 2h attack does NOT recover fast

I've had good results with the Mastodon Halberd, the sheer amount of damage is enough to negate any concerns I had. I've heard the Santier Spear is great, combining the movesets of spears and halberd.

Santier's Spear is a really neat weapon. Before you break it it's basically a halberd. After you break it, it can never break again because durability is already at zero and it can't be repaired, but it doesn't lose any damage and gains a new moveset. One handed it's got the moveset of a spear. Two handed it gets a twinblade R1 and a halberd R2, with a curved sword running attack.

But it doesn't scale. At all. And even with a Raw infusion, it's only gonna do like 240 damage.

Neat as a concept, shit in practice.

Decisions decisions. Gutter, Harvest Valley, or Cove.

Played a ton yesterday and used two Bonfire Ascetics to put Skeleton Lords and Scorpioness to NG+ to grab their rings on the advice of a friend. Scorpioness was the hardest since I kept getting idiots who ran right up to her at the front of a fight and got one-shot when she emerged.

Also picked up the Lion Mage set and Hexer Hood, so I just need a new staff that's not Sunset and I can start putting out some real damage.
