I went to go see the premiere of Divergent with some of my friends yesterday. Aside from the fact that no one told me it would be a 2 1/2 hour long movie when we watched it at 11 PM, I enjoyed it and thought it was a decently good movie, although not something I necessarily need to watch again for any particular reason. I haven't read any of the books, so I went into the movie completely blind. That being said, if I had one problem with the movie, it's that the pacing wasn't great. Basically half hour of intro stuff, hour and a half of training.....and training.....and more training.....sigh....and more training, some plot bits here and there, and then half hour of fighting THE MAN. It very clearly established a dystopian tone early on, so I was anticipating the eventual revolution, which took a freaking eternity to get to. Also the romance between Four and Not Katniss Everdeen(I know her name, but that's really what she is) was really freaking weird. Again, just going off of the movie, Mr. Broody shows no interest in Not Katniss, she makes goo goo eyes at him, then they facebattle, his contract mandates that he takes off his shirt, she takes her final nightmare test thing and shows that she's afraid of him raping her(HOLY CRAP WHAT), and the movie already said that he can see all this, he's suprisingly OK with all this and it's completely ignored for the rest of the movie, and then they're in love. Now I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that's not how love works. Like at all. Other than that, interesting story, visuals were pretty good, I didn't want to punch the main character girl in the face(I'm looking at you, actual Katniss), and there was some genuinely good suspense and action.
I do have a few plot questions that I hope were explained in the book:
Who in the heck was that Asian lady that did Not Katniss' test?!? She's all freaked out that she's Divergent, then she shows up later at a tattoo parlor doing tattoos and says she's just a tattoo artist, and then shows up later for Not Katniss' final Dauntless test. If she's just a tattoo artist, what the heck is she doing in these places?
Why are the selfless people faction in control of the government? They've already mentioned that they have a faction of honest people that take jobs as lawyers and whatnot. Why aren't those people in charge of government? Why is everyone so OK with the smart people being in charge? Did anyone vote on this? In fact, why are the other factions perfectly fine with having no representation in this political system?
Why is Four immune to mind control? Is he Divergent? Is it just that he has the benefits of main character-itis? Is he super strong mentally or something?
Why does bodaciously everyone except Not Katniss know what a Divergent is? Her mom knows, the Asian lady knows, all the bad guys know, Four knows.... I'm really confused as to who has access to this information.
The movie says that Four has been watching the smart people make mind control serum for weeks and that he knows that they could make an army with it. SO WHY DIDN'T HE FREAKING TELL ANYBODY?!?!?
