Yes you can. But you still need to die to him.

probably because it's the only place in the game where dying is required, so when you can't damage him, they let you run away and maybe prepare yourself for it

I think it's more they leave the door open to let you run away...but you know you have to go back in. You know that you have to go against everything you've learned so far and let him kill you. No running away, no avoiding it, you have to stand in front of him and die by your own choice.

I have a new favorite thing to do. I sit in the Parish in Elite Knight gear, Knight shield, and Drake sword. I ooze n00b. I wait until I'm invaded, then act like I'm trying to use the bonfire, or leave through the fog gate, depending on where I'm at. When that doesn't "work" I confront the phantom like I'm scared. Shield constantly up, swinging wildly at them and missing by a long shot. Then when they attack me, I parry them and switch to my Stone Greataxe +5 or Black Knight Greatsword +5 or my Demon's Greataxe +15, etc, then riposte, killing them in one hit, because it turns out I'm really level 710 in new game plus, with 99 in every stat and wearing the hornet ring.
So yes, I'm ripping off The Ruse video.

Also fun is doing that with the Dragon Bone Fist +5 and Invisible Weapon. I cast it, then put the catalyst away, before they get to me. Then I parry them barehanded, then riposte with the invisible Dragon Bone Fist. I've gotten so much hatemail. "I'm reporting you for hacking" etc.

Since Dark Souls is currently on sale at Steam for cheapies, I'd like to know if anyone's familiar with the PC version enough to answer whether it's worth buying if I'm not going to be using a controller.

not necessarily, it just takes patience and an understanding that making a mistake could be costly. if you are a run and gun GOTTA GO FAST COD shooter then yes this game will most likely be hard and too frustrating to at first because its simply not what you are used to.

you will die, you will fall off a cliff by accident, but its also very rewarding when you are progressing and actually going through the game, not to mention the lore that comes with it (if you care for that sorta thing)

that being said its not a game for everyone. but at the current price of the game, its still worth a shot for most people.

otherwise if you aren't getting a controller to go with the game for pc, don't bother. the PC controls are booty, but with a controller it works just fine

On a related note, Microsoft has resumed production of their wireless controller adapter for the PC for $15 on Amazon.

It's not really hard. You just have to play it slower and more thoughtfully than most games. It's not a hack and slash. You have to be more careful.

the game isn't really that hard provided you're not an idiot and you can see patterns and context clues

but it is consistently terrifying because at no point does it let up and your first time through that can be really intimidating and scary
