I ended up going with the pairings I felt were obvious in my first playthrough (Chrom and Sumia, Rikken and Maribelle and things like that). Reading their interactions to get an idea for how they felt for each other. Some are a little too... adversarial to be marriage options sometimes. Although I was still endlessly amused by Vaike and Tharja. So.

I'm getting this game shortly, and would you recommend playing it on easy if it's your first time? I don't want to just rush through it but idk if normal will be tricky, and i think i won't be playing the classic mode where it's permadeath

You really don need to play on easy.

If you're really concerned about difficulty, then play on standard mode, but choose the option that lets any defeated units return at the end of battle. Most of the "stress" of the game comes not from how hard it is (not until higher difficulties, anyway), but from worry that you're going to lose someone you care about.

You could play Classic where units die, but if you are like anyone who plays these games, you will end up resetting a lot. If that sounds like something you don't want to do, then do Casual mode.

Standard + Casual is a solid difficulty choice. Difficult but not frustrating.

So I'm playing Genealogy of the Holy War and it makes me wish it were remade and officially released stateside.

Seriously, I'm loving these massive chapters. I wish Intelligent Systems would use it again in a future title sometime.

I must just be really bad at it then. @-@ I'm playing casual on Hard for my second run through and keep getting flattened by the board enemies that pop up. Not doing spectacularly better on the actual levels....

Yeah, I got the NPC wife (she's just called "Maiden," they didn't even give her a real name) in my second file. It sucked. Was going for Olivia and messed up, whoops.

Chrom is also bit of a jerk in that case. The scene where Lucina is just born, but Chrom's army is being called off to war again, rather than having the mother urge to go with them (if the mom is one of the normal characters), Chrom is like "It's too dangerous, STAY IN THE CASTLE WITH MY KID, WIFE!" and then he just leaves.

I know it's a failsafe, but it still rubs the wrong way a bit.

Chrom married Sully even though there was at least two non-retreated options and she said he was going with him and she could fight. Of course I couldn't use her so I just sort of wondered how that worked.

I'm... not sure what you're saying here? You probably married Sully because you had more support points with her than with the other two. And you totally can use her to fight. It's only the NPC Maiden that Chrom tells to stay behind; all the named characters will go with the army.

I'm saying that Sully had retreated so she got mad at Chrom for wanting her to stay home and keep safe stating she could fight. However, she couldn't fight as I was on classic. So it felt odd how mad she got when she couldn't even do anything due to game mechanics.

Ah, I see now. I've never had characters die/retreat since I always play with permadeath on, so I didn't know this was a thing that could happen.

That actually makes it a little worse in my opinion. At least with Maiden, there's a reason Chrom won't let her fight... it's because she can't fight. At all. But saying the same thing to Sully, or any of the other capable PCs, really, really sucks. TAKE THIS BABY, WIFE.

Maybe it's supposed to imply that whoever it is suffered a crippling injury, and while they are alive, they really can't fight. Sully is bull-headed enough to protest, as are a few of the others, but from Chrom's point of view, they're more a liability than anything. Like, they can hold a sword, but maybe their leg is injured so they can't walk or ride a mount properly. That's my logic for making the situation sound better on paper, anyway.

Well actually Chrom relented in dialogue. So he said she could fight. But she couldn't. Because she had retreated earlier.
