at first i was filled with a blinding white hot rage and then i actually looked at it again and yeah that's basically right

except replace reviewers with just generally people who have no idea what they're talking about

I thought the Sonic Cycle was that reviewers rate the games as shit or not top tier for X reasons, the sonic fanbase goes ballistic, and everyone else lives life not caring about the Sonic franchise.

So basically the Zelda, Pokemon, and Mario franchises only with a lot less caring.

And hey, it's better than the hype other games get that falls off the wagon as soon as it's released.

It happened with Pikmin 3 where reviewers gushed over the game, marveled over all of the demos, and looked at every trailer with a fine-toothed comb to glean everything about the gameplay.

Then when it came to review it or make gameplay videos to show how the early levels play out, the same reviewers were frustrated with the things they gushed about and couldn't remember how gameplay mechanics worked after figuring it out from stalking the trailer frame by frame.

Then again, reviewers are pretty much a breed of their own at this point in the industry, so we probably shouldn't question their (lack of) knowledge or memory.

I think that's part of the reason people didn't like Sonic and the Black Knight: It's a Sonic game

If it was a game where Mario had a sword it would probably be freaking awesome, but people hated on it just 'cause it's Sonic

Speaking of Black Knight, I feel that's the first game where Sega started redeeming themselves- it's got a gimmick, sure, but it's actually pretty daisies fun

Those are synonyms.

That would be as dumb as Shadow using guns.

no

originally, it was that a sonic game is announced, looks awesome, it's called a return to roots. then they show off a billion new characters and it starts to fall apart, and then finally it comes out and it's awful.

hilariously enough, the only game this actually applies to is sonic '06. Shadow the Hedgehog didn't introduce any new main characters, Sonic Heroes only introduced one and it was considered pretty good, and when they came out everyone loved both Sonic Adventures.

the only problem is, like most early 3D platformers, when you look back to them the gameplay kind of falls apart because everything had some experimental aspect to it.

however, nobody seems to care that the problems with early sonic games were problems consistent with most 3D platformers

Actually, it was this:

1. Screenshots released, looks awesome, fans get pumped, Sega says they're going "back to basics"
2. Officially announced at E3 or something, along with gameplay videos; A few additional characters are revealed to appear/reappear
3. Gimmick is revealed, and game is overrun with pointless characters
4. Release to incredibly mixed reviews, mostly negative, while at the same time being defended by around half of the Sonic fanbase

something along those lines

Applies to '06, Heroes (maybe), Secret Rings, Unleashed, and I THINK Black Knight might count

People who defend 06 probably like Superman 64.

Heroes is personally my favorite 3D Sonic game, yeah, Nostalgia has a word here, but I just love the level design and themes, not to mention it has one of my favorite soundtracks, that and I don't find the control that much of a pain.

Secret Rings control was god awful, but it was impressive for a Wii game in the graphical area, that and it was MILES better than 06 which came before it(This game was originally even going to be a Sonic 06 Wii port!)

Unleashed wasn't really that bad a game, the daytime stages were entertaining to play, but the werehog dragged the game down.

Black Knight kind of fixed Secret Rings control issue, and I personally kinda like a lot of aspects from it, but it's linear as fuck, so bleh.

The Sonic community gets alot of shit, but some of it I don't think it deserves, I've said this before, check out Sonic Retro, that's the best example of what the community can do.

NO

DO NOT CHECK OUT SONIC RETRO

holy fucking christ i remember that fucking place every now and then they churn out a cool enough rom hack but the majority are canceled because someone is a giant fucking child and then everyone else is a giant child

there is a reason i basically abandoned every sonic forum i ever went to

the sonic fandom honestly competes with the homestuck fandom for most inlaid with fuckers

You obviously haven't been around the Pokemon or Zelda fansites.

go to Zelda Dungeon or ZeldaInformer around the time A Link Between Worlds comes out.

You will see so much childishness from the members, the staff, the admins, EVERYONE, that you'll never want to set foot in there again.

The general trend is:

-People are hyped for game
-Reviewers dare to give less than 9.5 or 10 on the game
-"HOW DARE THEY. DON'T THEY KNOW THAT THE THINGS THEY DISLIKE ARE THE WHOLE POINT OF THE GAME?"
-threads to rally people to petition the reviewing site to admit they are Zelda-hating assholes.
-threads suddenly pop up saying "hey guys, what if the reason the reviews aren't as good is because the game sucks?"
-flamewar about how that's not possible and that "Nintendo/Aonuma/Miyamoto/Reggie wouldn't do that. It'd be a repeat of [Game I don't like, usually the most recently released one]
-flamewar about "wait, you didn't like X game, what the fuck man?"
-despair sets in as news trickles in about the game
-"FUCK, THIS IS REALLY [previous Zelda game] ALL OVER AGAIN, HOW CAN THEY DO THIS TO US?"
-People bitch because the Admins teased that the game would be fantastic with their "in at Nintendo" and those drawings/fake screens they made to get around NDAs (which like, never fucking is real, and usually are stolen from sites like GameFAQs after the first time they "trolled" with TP's fake screens)
-People cry that this is the worst Zelda game ever
-Game is finally released, and everyone is sullen about it.
-People who get the game and weren't part of the bullshit genuinely enjoy the game
-flamewar on which opinion is correct until the next game is announced, then suddenly HYPE

You'll never escape.

With Zelda it's more unanimous hate.

I'd wager that even the Pokemon fandom can't hate more than the Zelda fandom, and the Pokemon fandom goes supernova on just about any Corocoro leak.

Eh I remember playing the Black Knight, and Id lump it in with Unleashed. (although it gets the spot for different reasons than... Chip.) The gimmick of swinging a sword bodaciously made my arm go limp. It was like playing an extreme version fo Wii Sports. Plus there was always one bit I couldnt get over, the spikes in Shadows level, one part of a lavel would not fail to screw me up without fail. :/

Still, I will admit, Im pretty pop flyin' to see how Sonics been doing lately :) Better yet Im glad to see that Eggmans gained weight again, as terrible as that sounds. You should have heard my outrage when in 06 it looks like he had been on a diet. Noone starves the Eggman XD

Coo coo cachoo motherfucker

Since most people won't get the joke, Eggman's name comes from the track "I am the Walrus", where one line is "I am the Eggman", this was reference in Eggmans theme E.G.G.M.A.N.

God, I wish more people knew that than me.

I was always told that it was because he kinda looked like an egg, and Sonic just started calling him Eggman as an insult and it just caught on

Honestly I hope they decide to take future Sonic games in the "parkour" direction like Lost World rather than the "speed" direction
