I'm trying to break out of my microwave-meal shell.

one step at a time, man, one step at a time... I think I already have cooking ground beef/meat down pat.

Watch some cooking challenge shows if you want to get ideas. Stuff like Chopped on Food Network, since it forces the chefs to make a dish that utilizes four random ingredients. Things like dragon fruit, rambatans, kaisershmarm (I have no idea how to spell it), hot dogs, saffron, bacon popcorn, Goldfish crackers, etc.

You get to see a whole lot of creativity in the dishes, and it may help you get some ideas of your own in addition to learning about the ingredients.

I actually pickked up a lot from Man Vs Food. Not the quantities obviously, but a lot of the cooking techniques and ideas.

I love Chopped, actually, but don't get to watch much Food network here. I've mostly been looking up recipes online, looking at stuff on the back of food boxes, stuff like that.

This site has actually been really helpful, especially for basics like cooking meats and such.

Also, I did it, I made edible food. A pasta/tomato sauce/chicken combo. I was terrified of over/undercooking the chicken but it actually turned out great.

One step closer to Martha Stewart, right?

Wow, you guys even have a food thread !
I'm cooking one of my favorite recipes, chicken breast with mustard/cream sauce (and sauteed potatoes, because potatoes go along with almost anything)
(Wait a minute ... is the english word for it really "sauteed" ?)

So my cheesecake ended up being mostly alright. It's not mixed perfectly so some patches taste just a bit differently. The inside is slightly undercooked so it's a bit more sticky than it should be. The crust is perfect. The browned outside doesn't taste like it's burned, but I'm sure if I had left it in the oven any longer it would have.

Lesson learned: Next time, have a large baking dish ready so I can follow the proper recipe.

If it's just the steam that does it you could try putting another tray on a rack below with water in it. Might not need to sit in another bigger tray necessarily.

Fried up some sausage and put it in some yellow rice with peas and carrots. Surprisingly tasty, despite how simple it is.

Yeah, a lot of good meals are also simple. I mean, I wouldn't trade the pasta w/ pesto I'm eating right now against some of the "sophisticated" meals I ate.
