So I've been doing some Modern Masters drafting. I've gotten a lot of value out of it so far.
Cryptic Command
foil Pact of Negation
2 Bridge from Below
foil Woodfall Primus
foil City of Brass
Tooth and Nail
Summoner's Pact
Blinkmoth Nexus
Kokusho, the Evening Star
Meloku the Clouded Mirror
Reveillark

I pulled a Dark Confidant, Adarkar Valkyrie and Engineered Explosives then drafted Vedalken Shackles, Life from the Loam and slaughter pact
Someone at my draft table pulled Tarmogoyf
I'll probably break down and buy some more packs before they run out because I'm a sucker

I did a split for a box of modern masters a week ago and I did pretty okay. Nothing spectacular though, our best foils were the shackles and doubling season. Other than those, we didn't pull super cheddar like Tarmogoyf. But overall we essentially got our cash back. I kinda want to get another but it's too pricey for me to not go splitsies on.

I keep forgetting that redrafting rares is not an international thing. I imagine it must be really frustrating when someone pulls really expensive cards and then does terribly in the draft.

Rare redrafting is the worst thing.

Rare redrafting is the worst thing.

Why do you think so? It rewards and thus encourages good deck building because, pack two or three, if there's an expensive rare in your booster there's also a good chance that it's not in your colours at that point. If you're not redrafting rares then you're gonna take it regardless, and your deck will be worse off because of it. If you are redrafting, you'll pick the better card for your deck, and your deck will have a better chance of winning, at which point you can pick the card from the pool anyway.

It just seems to me like a greater reward for playing well.

And what if someone else pulled that very rare, very valuable card and they drafted it? With rare redrafting they'd only get to keep it if they won, otherwise it's gone when they're the ones who pulled and took it first.

It's not a reward for playing well, it's a punishment for whoever pulled it. The reward for playing well is some boosters and maybe a promo card depending on the tournament prize. No one but the person who drafted it "deserves" that card.

I like the way we do it here. It makes you think.

"Do I want the expensive card that sucks in this format, or do I want this fifty-cent uncommon that will practically win it all for me."

My store usually rare redrafts, but because of potential value for modern masters, they opted out of redraft.

I dunno why it's a punishment if it's redrafted at the end. It'd be a punishment if everyone was opening boosters from a box for fun, but anyone who got a good rare had it taken off of them. Maybe it's just a different mindset, but I don't consider myself owning the cards until the draft is over and done with.

Same here. Although pretty much everybody takes the rares anyways. In fact, the rare in your first pack pretty much determines your entire deck.

A friend gave me all his cards today. On one hand it's sad that I've got one opponent less, on the other hand there were some pretty awesome cards in there :D

Reminds me of that friend of mine who, god knows why, bothered to make a "suicide deck" entirely made of cards that slowly lowered your own life.
Sometimes, when he played with someone he didn't like, he would lend them this deck, spend the game defending, never attacking his opponent, and still win.
