No! I was quite unaware, as I've never used it to interact with other people! I just own games like Garry's Mod, several variants of Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead, and the like because the titles and icons are pretty![/sarcasm]

You'll want to knock that shit off if you're seriously asking for help.

I think you confused people when you said "improperly closing Steam". Might have wanted to word that better and explain your situation better.

But yeah, Valve should really get around to fixing offline mode.

Yeah knock off the sarcasm and self-righteousness, buddy. Steam doesn't owe you any special treatment and none of us do either. Why in the world would you be badmouthing anybody here? Yeah, not everybody is trying to help, and some folks are poking a bit more fun at you than they need to, but being all rude to others makes me reeeeally reluctant to help you.

Again, asking for a simple, logical solution does NOT require you to go in an indignant rage cursing out steam and lashing out at forum members. You're not fighting the good fight dude, you're complaining and throwing a bit of a tantrum because you're not getting exactly what you want. It's immature. Sometimes sucky things happen, that doesn't mean you need to get mad at all of them. Learn some patience, respect others, and maybe grow a thicker skin.

That being said, maybe because I'm a pushover, I found this on the Google for you.

Quote:
1. Make sure you can login automatically (login/password saved)
2. Go to your steam folder (example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam)
3. Create a regular text document and call it 'steam.cfg'
4. Add the following lines:
BootStrapperInhibitAll=enable
ForceOfflineMode=enable
5. Save the file and run steam.

http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.ph ... rnet-fails

Dunno if it'll help your particular situation.

insert a long and mostly uninformed rant here

firstly, wow rude

secondly, as you kept talking about "the steam people" instead of just saying "valve" like anyone who knew steam was run by valve would, naturally I assumed you didn't know that.
Also naturally, like everyone else, when you say you closed something improperly, guess what we think? That you closed something improperly.

Don't act like a snarky asshole because you failed to get a point across.

More importantly, you also seem to be entirely unaware that Steam having offline troubles is, ha ha, a bug. It's not a thing that's purposeful, Valve just is really shitty at fixing things.
You also seem to have missed the idea of just leaving Steam open. You're clearly posting every so often, so I can assume you get internet at least once a day, so why not just connect once and then leave it on. Don't turn steam off ever. It's not that big of a program and it'll bodaciously stop half the problems you're having now.

Now also note, you're probably not gonna be able to play your games anyways! Guess what they all need? Updates! Guess what they're going to try and do the second they get a connection? Update. Guess what is going to take a while and prevent you from playing them? The update.
That's not Valve, that's the game's developers. So are they evil and greedy because their games have at least semi-constant bug fixing?

So before you start acting like everyone is just stupid for pointing out how this is actually mostly a problem you alone are having, why don't you take a step back, and realize you have bodaciously lied about your problem and worded it badly to boot.

Yes, guess what, a lot of people don't like how fucked the offline mode is, but it's not Valve being greedy (yes, the company who does 90% sales every summer is greedy clearly), it's Valve being basically unable to fix bugs without making bugs. If they could fix bugs, TF2 would have a lot less problems.

Yeah, I just meant that pretty much everyone gets this bug every now and then.

If none of you all tone the attitude down, this thread gets locked.

You buy games through them, would be nice if they worked as intended, not much reason to buy them otherwise.

@Galaxy Man: If you're not here to discuss fixing this problem, whether or not it's just me, then I don't know why you're here. Alright? I admit that I talk far too much and 'tangent' might as well be my middle name for how much I stray from a topic, but rest assured I do not intend to fight or insult you. Yes, my sarcasm was rude, but it felt necessary to defend myself because your questions insulted my intelligence. I don't know you, not that I don't want to know you, but I have no reason to be unpleasant with you. If you try an upset with me, I will respond accordingly.

I did not intend to lie about my problem, I admit that it was originally poorly worded, and other people clearly have this problem. Just because I'm the only person whose come forward with it doesn't mean there aren't others, and it doesn't make it any less significant an issue; you would think the same thing if it happened to you. The big issue is: there is an offline mode for Steam, and I'd really appreciate if it worked when I lack internet, even moreso if it didn't require a contrived exercise through online mode to activate it. I hope this answers any questions or skepticisms you might have. If you're not going to help or just going to treat me like an idiot, please leave me alone.

@Syobon: Yeah, I just went back and read it again. It did come off the wrong way, I'll fix that in a second. Also, thank you for recognizing what my actual problem is.

@Exeres: Did you read the first page? The majority of responses for my legit request for assistance was just trolling. I figure one guy just did it to be in the topic and the others joined in, so I didn't take it seriously or outright insult anybody. I DID seriously ask for help, and nobody helped. Everybody had something to say, though.

@SaintCrazy: Again, if everyone's going to take my (admittedly heated) explanation and make it seem as though I'm attacking them, OR simply cast off my need for assistance and joke about, then yeah, I will respond negatively! I started this topic in the hopes of finding a fix through someone who's done it before instead of wasting my time trying to solo the problem and make it worse, then almsot all thirteen original responses were nothing but snide comments and troll tactics.

I'm not being self-righteous (or at I don't intend to be), I just know everybody's willingly and deliberately wasting my time instead of actually offering assistance. However, if that solution you've got there does actually work, I thank you very much for absolving my problem and consider you a kind, rational, compassionate user who has my appreciation.

Again, everybody, I can be a pissy guy and talk about NOTHING of importance in a really angry fashion, but I mean no one any harm or offense. Nobody here has my disdain, I want to be friends with everyone. If I've made anybody sincerely angry in this topic, please come forward in PMs and tell me why. I want to make it right.

No. If someone tries to upset you, you report the post to the moderators.

I agree that sometimes, people on AZ make fun of members who post new threads or just look down on them (don't act like a victim, Galaxy Man). But that doesn't mean you have to lash out against them. Just report them and if they're being idiots, we'll tell them to knock it off. Or give them a warning, or temp ban.

You could have added in the thread title that you were looking for help with an issue, Medic.

Don't be a derivative of acceleration = don't be a jerk.

Ambiguous variables are ambiguous.
